Ever wondered what life’s like for an MG stylist? We caught up with our senior styling assistant (and all-round babe) Steph to find out what she gets up to every day, how she got into the fashion industry, and who’s wardrobe she’d love to raid…
How did you get to where you are at MG?
I did a ‘Fashion Styling and Image making’ degree at Salford University. While I was there I managed to gain some great work experience in London (an internship at Love Magazine). Plus I worked with a London based Free-lance stylist which really helped. After that, I applied for a paid internship at Missguided and managed to get it. Ever since then I’ve just worked my way up!
What’s a typical day like for you?
A typical day would start with me prepping all of the clothes in the morning before we start shooting. Then I’m on set for the majority of the day… dressing the models and helping with anything styling-related. Fast, fashion and everything in-between
What the 3 things do you love most about your job?
The first thing would be being around fashion all day long. After that, definitely the studio team (we’re a proper little family). Lastly, it’d have to be meeting amazing models everyday. They’re all so lovely and it’s like working with your friends everyday.
What would your top tips be for someone who wants to get into styling?
To literally gain as much experience in fashion as you can. Being able to work in a fast-paced environment really helps. Absorb everything, work hard, and your enthusiasm will always shrine through.
Did you always want to be a stylist?
I always wanted to do something fashion-based… Then in my first year at Uni, I was doing design/styling, which really made me realise my love for styling specifically. I loved the business side of fashion, too. That was something I always considered, but I didn’t want to leave the creative world behind. So Styling was the winner in the end!
What 5 things should every girl have in their wardrobe RN?
- A utility jumpsuit. My go-to always.
- A tie-dye Tee. This summers staple piece.
- Denim anything. Shorts, shirts, dress – denim can be the introduction too any outfit.
- The cow-boy boot – can make any outfit a vibe .
- The scrunchie. Bringing back the 90’s.
Who inspires you and why?
For my style inspiration, I’m always looking at Pinterest/influencers. I think you can take ideas from anything and everything. Some of my favourite IG accounts to follow at the minute are @pepamack, @shei.mi and @josefinehj.
What’s your favourite quote/mantra?
“Count your blessings not your problems.”
If you could raid anyone’s wardrobe, who would it be and why?
Carrie Bradshaw from Sex In The City… Just because that would be any girls dream come true. For personal style, I would say Hailey Bieber. She’s always very chill/cool. No one can pull off a pair of denim shorts and boots quite like she can, but she can still be classy and sophisticated, too.
