A few months ago, we invited students at Manchester Metropolitan University to design what they saw as a summer essential for 2014.  We promised the best an internship at MGHQ and told them that the winning design would be created and sold onsite.  We were blown away by the entries but there could only be one winner.  This is Emma Blackett’s story on the inspiration behind her design and a diary of her time at Missguided…

Designing for Missguided

The competition

Studying fashion design and technology at Manchester Metropolitan University lets me hear about fashion competitions easily, especially if the brand’s head office is based in Manchester. One of my tutors posted a link to the Missguided competition.  The brief?  To design the ultimate SS14 festival piece that would be produced and sold on the Missguided website. I thought this was an amazing opportunity, not only because the winning design would have your name featured next to it, but you would also win a week’s internship at Missguided’s head office and even get £500 to spend on their website! After reading the brief I thought that I better start researching festival outfits on Missguided’s website, as well as competitor’s websites and prediction forecast sites.

Festival Design Inspiration

Co-ords Design Inspiration

Coachella festival had just finished and photos of everyone’s outfits were on every prediction forecast website. Looking through images of what each person wore really put me in the festival mood especially since I was going to Manchester’s Parklife! There were lots of tropical, fruity and conversational prints on co-ords, shorts and playsuits which looked really fun. I also loved the little lace trims that kept popping up on people’s outfits. These images gave me the inspiration to design a co-ord set in a cool pineapple print which features eyelash lace detail on the sides of the shorts.

Winning Internship Design

Winning the competition!

A week after I emailed my design to Missguided, I got an email from the Marketing team letting me know that I had won! A couple of weeks later they sent me photos of my outfit and now it is online ready to sell to the public!! Yesterday was my first day as an intern at Missguided. I love the outfit after trying it on for the first time last night. They both work really well as separates and as a co-ord set. It’ll be perfect to pack for my holiday in two weeks time travelling around Thailand and Cambodia! Now I have to wait and see what the rest of this week as a design intern will bring.
