We are all about powerful girls making waves in their field, so we sat down with artist Sophie Tea to talk all things painting, business and Insta.

Sophie Tea is a self-made entrepreneur, leading the way in the Instagram art scene, and we couldn’t be more here for it.

She started off creating a “Tinder for art” app (which we would 100% swipe right for), before posting her paintings on her feed. (Her work is just something else, check out her Insta for more originals).

Q: Hey, we are so excited to meet you! Tell us a little bit about yourself.

A: Hi I’m Sophie Tea, I am an artist and I operate solely on Instagram.

Q: So Sophie, can you give us an insight into the process behind your paintings?

A: So, I get acrylic paint and I mix it with a pouring medium. I add a bit of alcohol, a bit of water and silicone oil. They need to be added in the right proportions and stirred at the right time. Then I put it in a cup and pour it across the canvas.

Q: Where do the ideas for your paintings come from?

A: It’s a very spontaneous process, so you don’t really know what you’re going to get when it comes out. I would say the skill is the use of colour and composition of flow through the piece. It’s such a fun process and I’d definitely recommend trying it for yourself.

Q: When did you first realise that you wanted to be an artist?

A: Basically I studied business at uni, then I went travelling in India and I noticed that loads of the hostels had graffiti on the wall. I asked the manager if I could paint in return for a free stay and he agreed. That was the first time I had painted since I was a kid at school. That’s when I realised I just loved it and I had to pursue it as a career.

Q: Tell us how you got started

A: With social media now, you can basically set up a business with just an Instagram account and that’s exactly what I did. It’s taken three years and it’s been a long slog, constantly working sixteen hour days, you do get there in the end, so just make a start.

Q: So obviously we know that you are killing it, but what’s the hardest thing about being an artist?

A: I try to run it like a business and we have a big team now, so I’m never at a point where I switch off. I run my business through social media, so even when I’m in bed I’ll be thinking of new ideas. I don’t really get a point where I can just chill.
