London-based babe MALKA is the latest artist on our radar and her infectious tracks are quickly becoming faves on our playlist. We caught up with her to chat proud career moments, fave gigs and what she’s got on the agenda for the rest of 2017…
Tell us about yourself…
I am a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist and director of my own record label Tantrum Records, I am getting ready to release my 7th album on my label (my second as MALKA)
Describe your sound in five words…
Alternative, tribal, uplifting, melodic pop
What was your big break into the industry?
Singing a cover of ‘These Boots are made for Walking’ for Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
When and how did you discover your passion and skills in music?
I broke my ankle when I was representing Scotland as a gymnast, and soon discovered that music was the only other thing that I was ever as passionate about.
What are you working on at the moment?
I am writing and recording my new album which will be released towards the end of the summer.
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017?
A new single in Spring, followed by the album, a UK tour and some festivals.
What’s been the proudest moment of your career so far?
Having my music used in the end credits of Hollywood Film, Scream 4.
Best gig you have ever played?
Playing at Glastonbury.

What 3 tips would you give to emerging artists trying to break into the industry?
Find your own sound, style and identity, don’t give up and work, work, work
Who inspires you in the industry?
SIA is a big inspiration. She is a great songwriter and has a great image too.

Probably a Kylie track – I love a bit of Kylie

This always changes, but probably Jessica Alba, she always looks stylish and effortlessly cool.
Where do you look for fashion inspiration?
Everywhere – films, magazines, on the street.
What best describes your style on stage?
Always wearing a headpiece and heels.
What’s your favourite fashion trend this season and why?
Leopard print, I love a bit of leopard print.
If you could steal anyone’s wardrobe who’s would it be?
Probably Jessica Alba.
Why do you think the relationship between music and fashion is so strong?
All the arts are so connected. Being able to create an entire identity for your project visually as well as socially allows your audience to connect with you even more as an artist.
