Multi-talented mega-babe Alexis Knox is a DJ and celebrity stylist to big names such as Rita Ora, Miley Cyrus and MIA so it’s no wonder she’s become somewhat of a powerhouse in London. We caught up with her to chat breaking into the industry, who to stalk on Instagram and celebrity wardrobe steals…
Tell us a bit about yourself…
My name is Alexis Knox and I am a London-based celebrity fashion stylist. I have worked with everyone from Miley Cyrus to Sky Ferreira, Charli XCX, Ciara, Rita Ora, Jessie J, MIA, Tove Lo, Petite Meller and Grimes to mention a few!
When did you know you had a talent for fashion?
My interests are really people, performance, show and experience and using clothes to emphasise that happening!
Where is the best place you have travelled to for work?
Oooh everywhere from LA to Asia, Russia, Milan, Iceland…. ALL OVER! I forget!
Who’s made you the most star struck to work with?
TBH in my game you cannot be the type of person who gets star struck. These artists are hiring you as an expert they are taking advise from – together you are a team and all the team, including the glam, the photog or director, I see as equal.
Saying that, I worked with Emma Bunton aka Baby Spice and it was surreal as i’d spent most of my childhood dressing up as her.
How do you figure out how to style a celebrity?
Like I said, it’s all about team work, which means communication. You need to find out what message their song/show/video or interview is trying to deliver and you work with them to use the clothes to facilitate that.
Who was the craziest person you have worked with?
Hahahaha now that would be telling! I did have a surreal moment however… I had been working with Miley Cyrus for a bit and she calls me as I’m casually trotting down the Hackney Road in London, and anyone who knows London knows its not a very glamorous spot, but anyway I digress…. Mileys calling because she’s going to be in Europe in the next week and asks me to style one of her band members to look like me…this is when I was really into cyber style, I was all platforms, silver lame and giant ponytails.
I literally had to create a mini me to be on tour with Miley Cyrus – that was a fun moment! Every one in the band rocked and it looked fabulous, me and Miley were really happy!
Which photographers have you enjoyed working with the most?
I’ve worked with photographers who shoot for Vogue regularly to emerging new photographers like the really talented Morgan Ellis Williams, who shot me in my lush Misguided outfits. I like to help champion fresh young talent, there’s always a great energy and enthusiasm that’s so infectious.
What did you study?
I actually studied illustration and fine art! I’m a picture maker, and my medium is clothes. I’m not a mad follower of trends, as I’m inspired by people with their own sense of style and ability to create original moments, so my approach to fashion has always been art based and avant garde and about story telling and communication.
When and why did you start styling?
I fell into it ironically by people presuming I was already a stylist! I’d just moved to London in the height of New Rave – it was all about club kids and dressing bigger and brighter! I was looking for work experience in a variety of fields from art to TV, and people would ask if I was a fashion stylist from how I was dressed, so I outreached to some stylists for work experience and that’s how I got going!
What tips do you have for girls wanting to break into the styling scene?
Girls you gotta work! Its hard, its not glamorous, and it takes years. You’ve got to assist to really learn your trade; a degree and a nice portfolio will not cut it. There’s so much to styling that putting a nice outfit together is the last thing it’s really about!
What inspires you styling aesthetic?
My client! Always.
Who would you most like to style?
Madona. She’s the Queen of evolution so i’d love to help her evolve away from the fishnet and fingerless gloves hehehe
Who are your current favourite people to follow on Instagram?
My sister , Katie Knox and her best friend Susannah Jones own Butchers Salon in East London. It’s become Aveda’s East London Flagship store, I’m so proud of them and their teams achievements, their Instagram is fun and fresh with lots of Girl Power!
What does the next year look like for you?
Gosh that feels so far away. Um, more of what I’m currently doing I hope! Lot of travel, meeting new people and embarking on new projects!
Who are you listening to at the moment?
I’m obsessed with an emerging artist Iris Gold. Her sound is soulful, but pop – really summer good vibes!
What’s your song to get you ready for a party?
Iris Gold – Steve McQueen
Who’s your favourite designer at the moment?
