Tell us about yourself…

I go by the name Butterjack and I am a musician and writer from the North of England. I started writing music about 8 years ago and after managing to pester people enough, moved to London, met some great people and haven’t been able to think about doing anything else since.

What does a day in the life of you look like?

Usually, wake up at 9:30am, grab a coffee and some breakfast, jump on the emails, see who I can irritate for an hour, then head to the gym for a little run. I get home for about 12pm and head up to the vibe room, which is where I make my music and I’ll stay there until I do something good or annoyingly bad. My nights are pretty much filled with friends and family!

Tell us about your debut single ‘Other Worlds’, what is the inspo behind it?

I had such a great time recording that track – I spent 10 days in the south of Spain with 2 mates. Just hot weather and a studio on the beach – the ultimate chilled holiday session. This song’s about maintaining a course and not wavering. The old saying “Anything worth having is worth waiting for.” It took me a little time to get my shit together and actually find my own artistic voice, but now I have and ‘I just want to show you it’s real.’

What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?

I have a friend in Dallas, Texas who is an amazing drummer and producer. I flew out to stay with him a couple years ago and write some tunes. He played on a weekend in a big nightclub called Cowboys and he absolutely blew my mind. I got to play a bit of guitar with them, but the craziest bit was the interval. Real disco – like 400 Cowboys and cowgirls doing the cha-cha slide on the dance floor in perfect sync. Amazing.

Who did you listen to growing up?

I actually stole my first CD from my uncle. “The very best of the 60’s” or something. Haha. I spent a lot of time at my grandparent’s house as a kid, so I loved the golden oldies.

What’s your guilty pleasure track?

Ah man. I don’t know. I mean, I know all the words to Ronan Keating – ‘When You Say Nothing At All’ – absolute banger!

What’s the last album you listened to all the way through?

Malibu by Anderson Paak. The guy’s incredible.

What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?

I’ve been lucky enough to have a couple of the tunes I’ve co-written be on the radio, that’s been a really weird feeling.

Who’s the coolest person you’ve worked with so far?

I could not say. Music is so cool because you meet so many weird and wonderful people. Over the 8 years I’ve been doing sessions and working with producers and musicians and writers and managers, I’ve met some crazy cats. My dad and I were big fans of Starsailor and I got the chance to do a session with them when I was a bit younger. It was really bizarre for both my dad and me.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

‘Dreams’ by Fleetwood Mac. I start the day with Radio 2, but the afternoon is different. Bit of Rinse FM to keep the spirits up!

What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to break into the industry?

Steal all the wisdom you can. Allow yourself time to explore what your voice is. Don’t put pressure on everything and be good with money!

You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?

John Mayer’s ‘Where The Light Is’ (Live in L.A) It’s a DVD too so I’m being greedy.

Where can we see you perform next?

 We’ll see, shall we!

What’s on the agenda for the rest of the year?

We’re going to start on the live shows, which I’m super excited about. I’ve got a couple of trips planned and just keep putting out music really. It’s taken a while to get going so now just making sure we don’t stop!
