We caught up with London based producer Coldabank to chat about his new track ‘Loving You’, guilty pleasure tracks and what he thinks we should be listening to RN.

Coldabank

When did you first realise you wanted to make music?

My dad had an acoustic guitar, which I was keen to get my hands on from a young age. Once I had learned my first chord, I was hooked!

How would you describe your sound?

Melodic, dance-infused pop.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?

I played the terrace at Amnesia in Ibiza a few summer’s ago. That was special. I was touring with Labrinth at the time and I had to warm the crowd up from scratch and it was crazy! It’s one of the best clubs in the world for me.

If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be and why?

For me, Frank Ocean is on top of the world right now. His melodies and vocal tone come so naturally, he just sounds like he is channelling raw energy. I know that sounds funny, but it’s true! You can’t fake that.

Who did you listen to growing up?

Well, my dad was big on Dylan, The Beatles and The Beach Boys, so plenty of that sort of thing from. Then there was a golden age of dance music I remember really loving… the likes of Fatboy Slim, Bassment Jaxx and Groove Armada had these epic tracks, which were clearly made for dancefloors, but you could sing along and hear them on the radio just as much. I’d hear Pete Tong playing them from Ibiza on Radio One and I remember thinking “I can’t wait til I’m old enough to go there!”

Who’s your biggest musical inspiration?

Ooooh, that’s tough. There are so many!! I think maybe Chris Martin from Coldplay. His song writing is next level. Or Calvin Harris, because he knows how to make great pop songs, and is able to re-invent his sound.

What’s your guilty pleasure track?

Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus. Someone put it on at a house party the other night as a joke. The joke backfired, because it went down as the biggest song of the night. Major sing-along!

What’s the last album you listened to all the way through?

Future – HNDRXX. In honesty, I was on a flight so I may have dozed off for a couple of tracks, but I got to the end! It’s great!

What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?

I had a show in London recently supporting Alan Walker. That was the first time I played ‘Lovin’ You’ in public, and the crowd reaction was amazing! You can’t beat that feeling of unleashing new music.

Who’s the coolest person you’ve worked with so far?

Not many people know this, but I used to be a mix engineer. My first gig as an assistant was working closely with Tinie Tempah on his first album. We’re still in touch now.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Calvin Harris’s new album, I was so excited for it! Also D.D Dumbo, The Japanese House, Avelino, J-Hus. It’s a real mixed bag to be honest. I have a diverse taste as a music fan.

What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to break into the industry?

Make as much music as you can and always keep trying new things.

You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?

Kid A by Radiohead. It is beautiful from start to finish. It’s diverse. It has chilled tracks, dance tracks and a great balance between electronic and organic instruments. I’d really struggle to get bored of that record.

What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017?

My tour schedule is starting get busier, so lots more gigs before the year is out. Also, there will be plenty of late nights in the studio perfecting new tracks for release.
