Hot off the L.A music scene, we caught up with vocalist, collaborator and writer, MOONZz, to chat fave gigs, career highlights and what’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017…
What does a day in the life of MOONZz look like?
8:00am: alarm goes off: “Warm On A Cold Night” by HONNE. I unknowingly press snooze 3-5 times.
8:45/9am: Roll over, stretch, meditate for a little. Kiss my love.
9:30: I write my stream of consciousness (morning pages) at least 2-3 times a week. It helps me set intentions every week.
10-11ish am: In traffic, i love listening to podcasts – I’m obsessed with Song Exploder, a podcast where musicians take apart their songs, piece by piece, by Hrishikesh Hirway, so I like to listen to a few a week while in traffic.
Depending on the session, I’m done around 7pm.
My days vary but I always make time to workout to clear my head, cook (brunch all day, every day), and take 15 minutes for myself. I have a few sacred views that remind me why I do what I do and hikes around LA that calm me down. Having a schedule is important for my ADD brain.
When did you first realise you wanted to make music?
I’ve played piano since I was 5, so melodies were always circling my head, at school, during recess, even in my dance classes. My dad and I would always sing James Brown, Tower of Power, or the classic Frank Sinatra on my rides home. It instilled this love for figuring out the melodies on piano, and that’s how I started writing in the first place.
I used to figure everything out by ear, and eventually I started sitting at the piano for hours, working on my own hilarious attempts at songs at 9.
How would you describe your sound?
I truly hate this because I don’t like boxing myself in a genre, you know? I feel I’m constantly reinventing my sound, but Indie-Tronic/ Alternative Pop with an electronic flare is where I’m at now. Trying to incorporate some cool low end electronic/ hip hop elements to keep the energy up, but the songs are still Alt/pop songs.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?
Northern Nights Music festival last summer was around 7k or some of these Sofar Sounds sets I’ve been playing in LA + SD— I love how intimate they are, and I feel like I actually get a chance to connect.
If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be and why?
I’d love to work with Taylor Mcferrin, D.R.A.M, Lauryn Hill, Ben Gibbard, Kevin of Tame Impala, Sia, Flying Lotus, Chilly Gonzales, Pharrell, Lady Gaga, Thundercat, Jaymes Young and Anna Wise. I’m probably forgetting a bunch of my favourites that I equally admire, but this list is a solid start. You know, each one of these writers and producers are immaculate in their own way. Not just for their writing but they’re all unreal in their own worlds of music, and melodically, I know we could tell some beautiful stories with laughs in between.
Who did you listen to growing up?
A lot of everything: Pinback, Zero7, Fiona Apple, The Strokes, The Bird and The Bee, The Postal Service, Smashing Pumpkins, Air, lots of what was featured on the OC soundtracks – because I’ll admit, it was unbelievable for the 7th grader I was to make the bomb mixes for everyone 😉 I loved all the classics too- Neil Young, Tom Petty!!! Oh yes…my sisters influenced my music taste so much.
Who’s your biggest musical inspiration?
Ms. Lauryn Hill and Fiona Apple are top of my list, and so is Amy Winehouse.
What’s your guilty pleasure track?
Champagne Supernova — Oasis
What’s the last album you listened to all the way through?
A bunch but here are my top 3:
Process by Sampha
Currents by Tame Impala
In Colour by jamie Xx
What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?
It was an incredible experience to have a song of mine in a national ad with Victoria’s Secret— and it played during the fashion show! I’m aiming higher and higher, with hopes of more opportunities like that
Who’s the coolest person you’ve worked with so far?
It’s been such an incredible experience to work with all the unique artists and producers…I’d say Daktyl or Netsky. Lot’s of cool things on the books for this year though so I’m excited.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
A lot of Sampha, always Kendrick…
Off The Ground by Anderson .Paak
Can’t Do Without You by Caribou
The Antidote by Taylor Mcferrin
Heartbreaks + Setbacks by Thundercat
What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to break into the industry?
It’s hard to keep your head on straight in a world of opinions and platforms for people to share those opinions— know what you want to be and don’t settle until you have achieved it.
You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?
– Kid A — Radiohead
Where can we see you perform next?
You’ll have to stay updated on my socials to find out! There’s a San Fransisco show or two coming up in July, LA and NY dates being planned as we speak.
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017?
To live my authentic self everyday, release true records that I wholeheartedly believe in, and some exciting announcements for summer and fall! Can’t wait to meet all of you.
– We have 2 other versions of ‘Navigator’ coming out very soon, a cool collab with a French producer named Khamsin that I’m stoked for, and we’re really close to nailing the next full MOONZz single that feels like my TRUE sound. There also may or may not be a TV show thing happening but I can’t talk about that yet and don’t want to jinx it!!!
