We caught up with Berlin-born singer songwriter Nina to talk about her latest track ‘One Of Us’, dream festival line-ups and what’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017…
Tell us about yourself…
I was born and raised in Berlin. I grew up listening to a lot of New Wave / Synthpop and Disco music. I’ve always been a huge fan of British acts like Depeche Mode, Queen, Talk Talk and David Bowie, so moving to the UK when I was 20 made a lot of sense. I collect polaroid cameras, vinyls and cassettes and I’m a big fan of 80s and 90s fashion.
How would you describe your sound?
Paradise longing Synthwave
What does a day in the life of NINA look like?
I usually get together with my drummer Lau to write and record songs in our studio. I also spend time playing with my cat Smokey, planning tours, and staying in touch with my fans via social media. There’s always some cool music shows in town to go and watch. I recently went to see Depeche Mode at the Olympic Stadium and they were awesome.
When did you first realise you wanted to make music?
I always loved singing ever since I can remember. I used to record myself singing and trying out lyrics as a kid. But when I was 18 I decided to focus on music professionally and invested all my time on making that happen.
Who would you say your musical influences are?
David Bowie, Giorgio Moroder, Kavinsky, Chromatics
Tell us about your newest track ‘One Of Us’…
This song is about feeling alienated and misunderstood. It’s a very personal song, as I was bullied in high school and it really affected me, so I wanted to share my experience. Writing poetry and singing was my main escape. I didn’t really talk to anyone about it at the time, as I felt no one could help me. But I eventually realised that talking about it and reaching out for help is the best you can do in that situation.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?
Playing at Synth Wave Live in London. A relatively small gig but a great line up with a lot of Synthwave lovers coming down to support. The fans and their energy was incredible.
What are you listening to right now?
“Issues” by Julia Michaels. It’s a beautiful song.
What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?
Opening for Erasure on their USA tour.
What would your dream festival line-up be?
What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to break into the industry?
Find your sound and stick to it. Get a really good team of people who believe in you, people that are passionate, hardworking and aren’t holding back on giving you feedback too. It’s all part of growing and finding yourself as an artist. Be confident, but stay humble.
You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?
Queen – A Kind Of Magic
Where can we next see you play?
28th July, Future Retro Festival, London
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017?
More shows around the UK and Europe and getting my debut album ready. Oh and a well-deserved holiday in Ibiza!
