We caught up with Sub Focus and Alma to talk about their new track ‘Don’t You Feel It’, what they’re listening to rn and what’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017.
Your new single Don’t You Feel It is out now, tell us about it. How did the collaboration come about?
Sub Focus: I’d been working on the song for a little while and found ALMA through her song Karma. I loved her voice, songwriting and general vibe so approached to see if she wanted to work to finish the track together.
Alma: ‘Don’t You Feel it?’ is a Sub Focus track which I feature on! I really liked the track from the first time I heard it and I wanted to be part of it! My managers got an email with the song on it and we heard it and both thought that it’s amazing. We started sending emails, soon I was in the studio and then the song came out.
When did you first realise you wanted to make music?
Sub Focus: Aged 12, me and my friends formed a band before we could even play any instruments! Shortly after, I got into music software and production, and with that electronic music.
Alma: I’ve always loved to sing and I think it’s been a dream forever but when I was like 15, I took music and writing seriously and started really working hard for it!!
What inspires you?
Sub Focus: The Internet and listening to old music is where I get most of my inspiration.
Alma: My friends inspire me and also other musicians that works hard for their dreams! Also my mum💚
What did you listen to growing up?
Sub Focus: I started off being into Nirvana and Grunge bands in the early 90’s then got really into Jungle and other electronic music towards the mid 90’s. Guys like Goldie / Chemical brothers and The Prodigy.
Alma: I listened to Amy Winehouse, Jackson 5, Prodigy and also loads of Finnish music like Pmmp
Alma, you’re working on your debut album with the likes of Rudimental and Gorgon City. What can we expect and when can we hear it?
Alma: I’m working reeeeally hard now for my first album. I can say that I’ve been working with Chali XCX, MNEK and loads of other crazy talented people! You can expect some new sounds, also kinda bright sounds and themes! Also maybe some features! I don’t know the release date yet but I can say that it’s the main goal now.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?
Sub Focus: Probably headlining the Glade Stage at Glastonbury years ago with my live show, that was a really special show. Also selling out Brixton Academy was a big career milestone.
Alma: The best gig I’ve ever played, has been my first European tour and every gig on that run was amazing!
What are you listening to right now?
Sub Focus: Marcus Intalex – He passed away a few months ago and was one of the most influential DnB producers ever in my eyes. I’ve had all his productions on repeat for the last few weeks.
Alma: I’m listening to French Montana and Drake on repeat at the moment.
What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to break into the industry?
Sub Focus: Be persistent, I had a load of demos ignored or overlooked to start with.
Alma: Advice hmm… I would say take your time, don’t stress the small stuff too much, try to enjoy every moment, be realistic, work hard, also take breaks when you need to, never stop if you feel that that this is what you wanna do.
You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?
Sub Focus: I think I would choose Massive Attack – Blue lines as it’s one my favourite albums of all time.
Alma: .Album for the rest of my life is Justin Bieber – Purpose.. It’s just full of RnB tuuuuunez
Where can we next see you play?
Sub Focus: I’m out in the US for DJ sets at Paradiso and Electric Forest festival then a bunch more festivals across the summer in the UK and Europe.
