2017 has seen so many babes make waves, we don’t know where to start. It’s also been the year that we witnessed the Bella Hadid/The Weeknd/Selena Gomez/Justin Bieber relationship dramz, that all too controversial Pepsi ad (no Kendall hun), the Oscar’s when La La Land were mistakenly announced winner (awk) and Queen B and Jay-Z welcomed twins Rumi and Sir into the world.
In more serious and promising news the world celebrated the widely attended International Women’s March with protests taking place globally. Celebs like Katy Perry, Chrissy Teigen, Miley Cryus and Emma Watson all took part – the biggest single day protest in the history of the U.S.
With the last 12 months coming to a close, let’s look back at the badass gals who owned it in 2017.
Do we even need to tell you how much Rihanna has slayed this year? Her Fenty x Puma collab has only become more and more successful, showcasing at fashion week with the most amazing installation – and riding through it on the back of a motorbike (only Rihanna could pull this off). The launch of her new make up range, Fenty Beauty, introduced 40 different foundation shades, meaning anyone can match their skin tone to their foundation; it’s about time we had total beauty inclusivity. She also appeared on the covers of seven issues of Vogue Paris and Dazed magazines, showing us you can never have enough of badgalriri.
Recently winning Best Female Act at the MOBO awards and announced on the shortlist for the Brits Critics’ Choice; Birmingham OG Stefflon Don is making waves with collabs you’re sure to have heard, with the likes of French Montana and Skepta. The 25 year old, who is signed with Universal Records, is set to be in the charts a whole lot more, so keep your eyes peeled and your ears open.
The Bronx rapper who’s gone from social media to two Grammy nominations, this qween is taking over the charts at the age of just 25. She’s already been called rap royalty, with a huge celebrity following Millie Bobbie Brown rapped her verses on Jimmy Fallon, and Janet Jackson danced on stage during her music video for ‘Bodak Yellow’. Her first three top 10’s make history and feature on the R&B/Hip Hop chart. With a 95% female fanbase, we’re backing her to slay in 2018 too.
2017 saw Halima Aden as the first hijab-wearing model to walk international runways for brands including Yeezy and Max Mara. Appearing on the covers of Vogue Arabia and Allure magazine, Halima is totally crushing the social stereotype for Muslim women. She’s also recently fronted Nikes first sports Hijab campaign, this is MAJOR in not only the fashion industry but a huge breakthrough for women worldwide. We can’t wait to see more of her in 2018.
Another gal goddess paving the way for female empowerment, Dua Lipa has provided us with the four golden rules we should all remember when dealing with f***boys. Her music vids and Insta pics are giving us serious fashion and beauty envy (have you seen those brows?!), and since teaming up with big names such as Sean Paul, the singer-songwriter only has bigger, better things to come.
Showing the world that love can conquer hate, Ariana Grande prepared the One Love tribute concert in only two weeks. Raising over £17 million, as well as donating all proceeds made from re-releasing ‘One Last Time’, Ari inspired us all to give back. You go, Grande. Oh, and her songs are pretty good too.
Billboard’s Woman of the Year 2017. Yep. When you get us talking about Selena there’s no stopping us. Her first Vogue cover, a kidney transplant and campaigning for charity are only a handful of achievements for her this year, whilst giving us tunes, films and a Netflix series. We can’t even predict what she’s going to bring next, but we know it’s going to be good.
We’ve all had that one job we know we won’t be in forever, but Aleyna Fitzgerald going from receptionist to modelling for Valentino isn’t something you see everyday. After winning Australia’s Next Top Model in 2016, she strutted her stuff in Paris Fashion Week this year; we’ll just be here, err, answering phones and setting up meetings until, ya know, the same thing happens to us…
A.K.A Cindy Crawford’s 16 (yes, 16!!) year old daughter. Modelling this year for major brands such as Alexander Wang and Prada, she’s living most teenagers’ dreams. We can only drool at the thought of her wardrobe, and with friends like Adwoa Aboah and Kendall Jenner, her rise to the top is sure to be a swift one, so watch this space.
Millie Bobbie Brown
Let’s take a second to talk about Millie Bobbie Brown. She’s been papped with Drake, has the lead part in Stranger Things and her rap verses are enough to challenge Nicki Minaj and Cardi B. At just 13 years old, her street style has been spotted by the best fashion journalists. Millie is the ultimate babe who we’re backing to do great things. Slay queen.
