#MISSGUIDEDDISCOVERED: PORTIS WASP| October 13, 2016
Meet Portis Wasp. He’s the cool af artist whose got us obsessing over his Disney-themed collages of our fave celebs. We caught up with him to chat about the inspiration behind his work and his proudest career moment to date…
Tell us about yourself…
My name is Portis Wasp and I am a Scottish collage artist and freelance writer. I have been creating collages in various styles for about two years now, but the most popular style of collage on my Instagram are my Disney-themed pieces. When I am not working on collage commissions for fashion magazines or private clients, I also write freelance for sites like MTV and ASOS, and mostly interview celebrity babes for them like Ruby Rose, Hailey Baldwin, Hari Nef, and Nyle DiMarco!
What inspires your work?
I’ve loved American pop culture from an early age, so everything from music to films, photography to celebrity culture influences my work.
When did you first start combining celebrity and Disney?
I was working with a photographer I know well called Scott Teitler, not long after I started making collages, and he had come across a cute illustration of a guy doing naked yoga alongside a bunny rabbit. He asked if I could maybe do a similar style using one of his images so I made a collage which combined his photography with Disney imagery. I liked the result enough to keep creating collages in that style for my Instagram.
What has been your proudest moment of your career so far?
I guess going from posting some collages on my Instagram to being asked to create a collage for Paper’s summer issue – the one with Miley and her pet pig on the cover – shortly after was a really great moment! It feels like forever ago now, but it showed me anything is possible as long as I work hard at what I love to do!
What keeps you motivated to keep pushing the boundaries with your art?
I think it’s important to push yourself to try new things wherever possible so that you can become better at what you do. I’ve always wanted to create things, so the motivation has always been there, but I find working with other creatives that I really admire is what’s going to make my art better in the long run.
Who would you like to collaborate with and why?
When I think of collaborating, I’m usually thinking of photographers and there are so many that I love! Steven Klein, David LaChapelle, Glen Luchford, and Harley Weir are some of my favourites!
What’s the coolest project you have worked on?
Recently, I created Piers Atkinson’s London Fashion Week invite which was really fun. He’s such a nice guy and so talented at what he does, so for him to ask me to be a small part of his SS17 show was a dream.
What I’m currently excited for is a project I will be working on next month for an international fashion publication. I’m not able to say anymore about the project at the moment but it will hit stands in November!
What is your favourite Disney film?
When I was younger I was more into hiding behind a cushion whilst watching Scooby Doo. I have watched Finding Dory twice though – Bailey the whale and Becky the dotty bird are my favourite characters.
Who is your favourite graphical artists and why?
I mostly follow photographers online but these are the artists I follow on Instagram: @sirjoancornella and @brechtvandenbroucke.
Both artist’s won’t be to everyone’s taste but I find them both funny and thought provoking. Alternatively, if you’re obsessed with celebrities you will probably love @sainthoax!
