After getting regrammed by Rihanna for his hilarious photoshopped Insta memes, we wanted to meet the guy behind the ‘gram. We caught up with London-based designer Freddie Smithson to chat design inspiration, current projects and favourite Instagram stalks.
Hi Freddie! How’s it going?
Great thanks! Thanks so much for having me!!
How would you describe your work?
A mash up of different people, situations and objects that have something in common. Coming together to make fun, bizarre images!
How did you first get into designing?
I was always drawing and painting as a kid. As I grew older, this moved into collage and experimenting with distorting images on scanners and photocopiers. I started properly designing digitally when I was at uni around five years ago and have been obsessively photoshopping ever since!
We LOVE your photoshopped images. Tell us how the images started and what inspired them…
Thanks! I love the concept of creating a scenario that doesn’t or couldn’t exist in real life. So I guess it’s the desire to create my own little world! Merging and altering every day things to create weird new collages! My main goal is to create fun and colourful work that makes people smile!
Fucking Rihanna regrammed your work, how did that feel?
OMG – there are literally no words…. like…. no words…
Which Instagram accounts do you love?
I’ve always been a huge fan of @PlastikMagazine’s Instagram. Also @MichelGaubert’s account is always spot on, and @taxcollection is consistently amazing too. And @Misguided (OBV)!
What kind of music do you listen to?
Anything house / deep house. Also – guilty pleasure is 90’s RnB! Anything I can dance to!
What projects/collabs are you working on right now?
I’m working at creative agency Cult Ldn on some pretty exciting projects with fashion and lifestyle brands. I just finished shooting a series of short films in Glasgow and London for a premium student brand, with some amazing influencers, which I can’t wait to go live soon! I also freelanced recently creating a GIF for Drake’s album launch which was probably one of the coolest projects i’ve worked on so far!
Tell us something weird about yourself…
I’ve been told this is weird… I have a major coat addiction…. at the last count I had around 45. Which need two dedicated wardrobes, and a drawer for the lesser worn ones. I do wear most of them on rotation though!
Favourite place to go when you’re not working?
Art galleries! Mainly the Tate Modern, I’m there most weekends, it’s become a bit of an obsession, but it’s such an amazing space to spend time and get lost in. I never get bored there!
Frank Sinatra said ‘The best revenge is massive success’. It’s a quote that’s stuck at the back of my mind since I first heard it.
How do you feel about being a #babeofmissguided?
If you could have a super power for a day what would it be?
What’s your ultimate life hack?
I don’t know if it counts as a life hack – but it feels like one to me. A £1 Starbucks filter coffee every morning is the one!
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Care less about what other people think!
