#MISSGUIDEDDISCOVERED: MYNXII| March 4, 2016
Ever wanted to know what it’s like to be an international makeup artist? We caught up with mermaid-haired Mynxii to chat about her job, what it’s like to be the editor of a magazine and got some tips on how to break into the industry…
Tell us a bit about yourself?
I am the Global Beauty Editor and LA Producer for Schön! Magazine, as well as an international makeup artist.
When did you know you had a talent for fashion and beauty?
I started as a working makeup artist at 14 working for Toni&Guy, and spent much of my high school career learning everything I could about the business. I kept moving forward every day, and haven’t stopped since.
Where is the best place you have travelled to for work?
I loved traveling to Miami. Work never felt like work. It was always fun and light, and reminded me why I loved this industry. We are here to create beauty and enjoy making it together. It’s all love at the end of the day. Sometimes we get caught up and forget. This place was so dreamy! The whole team treated the job like a working vacation.
Who was the craziest person you have worked with?
A great businesswoman never tells her secrets! But I will say that most of the talent I have worked with has been lovely. It’s usually management that makes things a bit difficult sometimes.
What did you study?
I actually went to school for Biochemistry. There was a moment when I realized my career was taking off full force, and I had to choose between two paths. I’m beyond happy with the life that I chose.
When and why did you start being a creative powerhouse?
I learned juggling creativity and management very early in my career. Learning to manage multiple salons while also growing artistically was a great way to learn how to handle the business side of things, which meant I could monetize my art without compromising my vision. Now, I apply that knowledge to running an international magazine, juggling production and creative direction.
What tips do you have for girls wanting to break into the scene?
Never give up!!! Keep moving. Do at least one productive thing a day to benefit your future, whether that be an email to someone you would like to work with, or finding new things to inspire you. These small things are the bricks in the foundation of your future.
What inspires your creative aesthetic?
I take inspiration from everything around me! Sometimes I love scrolling Instagram for hours and looking at fun, happy girls with all their bright, interesting clothes. Sometimes my eye will catch something on the darker side that I saw on the runway and my direction will change immediately. I find inspiration in music. A lot of times I will tell my team, “ I want this to look how this sounds.” I know it’s a little left wing.
Who would you most like to photograph?
If I could turn back time, I would have loved to shoot the supermodels of the 90s. There was such a power and elegance during that time that hasn’t been matched since then.
Who are your current favourite people to follow on Instagram?
I’m a sucker for anyone with fun hair colours. I also love following the designers that inspire me, and great creative directors.
What does the next year look like for you?
I hope to be doing more of the same thing, but on a whole new level! I’m not in the business of making pretty pictures. I’m in the business of creating ICONIC IMAGES! I want to create the kind of images that inspire more beauty in the world get referenced for new ideas.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
I’m loving the strange music I’ve been hearing on the runways this season. Gareth Pugh did it best with his dark interpretation of Grace Jones’s “Corporate Cannibal.” I also like to lighten things up with old disco.
What’s the last song you listen to?
“Temporal” by Buscabulla
What’s your song to get you ready for a party?
“Mama Mia” by ABBA
What’s your guilty pleasure and most played?
“California” by Grimes
What’s your spirit animal?
What makes you laugh?
Late night silly memes
What’s your secret addiction?
Who’s your celebrity wannabe wife?
Young Brigitte Bardot or Linda Evangelista
What would be your superhero power?
What was the first thing you did thing morning?
Answer a million emails!
Tell us something weird about yourself?
I absolutely LOATHE an unmade bed. I can’t sleep in a bed with messy sheets.
Most used Emoji?
If you were a film?
Describe your style in 3 words
Classic, Vintage, Colour
What item of clothing can’t you live without?
Pretty high waisted undies!
What items do you make sure you pack on your travels?
A great book
Who is your style icon and why?
I’m obsessed Daphne Guinness. She once did an interview for Vanity Fair, and under “occupation,” she wrote “Daphne Guinness.” This is a woman who is 100% confident in herself and continuously inspires me with her fire and creativity.
Where do you look for fashion inspiration?
I love the style and grace of older generations. I’m OBSSSED with Caroline Dell’Orefice and Linda Rodin. Good God, I hope I grow into the great women that they are one day.
What best describes your style?
Fluid. I often get told that I always look different every time someone sees me. I tell them I just have a very large closet.
What’s your favourite fashion trend this season and why?
I’m on fire for the new glam rock collections lately. This decadent throw back has been a long time coming, and I adore the colour, texture, and glamour inspired by the late 70’s-early 80’s luxury.
If you could steal anyone’s wardrobe who’s would it be?
I would dive right into Iris Apfel’s closet in a heartbeat! Her collection is so massive; it’s been on display as an entire art show. I could get lost in that wardrobe for years and still find new things daily.
