#missguideddiscovered: A-Minor| April 11, 2018
Missguided Discovered caught up with songwriter, producer and DJ, A-Minor, to talk all things music, style, general life inspiration and what’s on the agenda for 2018.
Hey A-Minor, how are you?
I’m great, thanks!
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m a songwriter, producer and DJ based in London. My heritage is Iranian; my parents came over to the UK in the early 80’s. I make House music that sounds like you’re on a beach sippin’ a Strawberry Mojito.
You released your single “Next To You” back in summer 2017, since then we’ve seen a number of fresh tracks! Firstly, congrats! Secondly, we’re interested to know what your biggest personal successor was from 2017?
Thank you! Probably hearing my voice on the radio for the first time. Every record I put out prior to 2017 had a featured singer, but on “Next To You” and “Stars In The Shade” I decided to use my vocal. I have been singing and writing for years but it was always as a reference for other artists. Seeing credible producers like Calvin Harris come out the shadows and vocal their own records has been a big inspiration.
What do you look to for inspiration when making a new track?
Anything and everything. I’m constantly recording voice notes of ideas that pop into my head. Sometimes I’ll wake up in the night, hear a melody and start singing into my phone (which my girlfriend can’t stand). I don’t really have a formula, but I listen to a lot of music and that gets me excited to create. I’m also really inspired by my peers. There have been countless moments at a friend’s studio, where I’ve heard something incredible and felt compelled to write something.
I’m sure trying to break it into the music industry has some serious challenges, what would you say was your biggest challenge?
I think getting comfortable with rejection. When I started out, I had no network; I didn’t know a single person in the music industry. I built my name by sending emails to music blogs, A&Rs, other producers, writers. I was getting about 1 response for every 50-60 emails, and of those, most of them were polite “no”s. Even today, I hear no’s all the time. It’s easy to take this rejection to heart; making music is deeply personal after all. But you have to realise, that it just takes one yes to break through, and if you don’t shoot you can’t score.
With that in mind, what advice would you give someone trying to break it into the industry?
Be relentless. I think persistence and resilience are the most important qualities in this industry. Don’t take anything too personally; music is subjective. I have had A&R’s turn down a record and then several months later hear the same record and say it’s the best thing they’ve heard.
Any new artists caught your eye that you’re rooting for at the minute?
A friend of mine, Desta French is releasing some timeless music – she’s bringing back true 90’s R&B. Other than that; Fabich, Sonder, Peggy Gou, Joe Hertz.
What is the track that gets you out of bed in a morning?
At the moment it’s Feel It Still – Portugal The Man. Perfect waking up tune on a sunny day.
The last song you listened to?
Bazzi – Mine
What is your life motto?
Don’t overthink it. Just do.
What are you three style must-haves?
A crisp white, slim-fit Oxford shirt
As many crew neck black tees you can fit in your wardrobe
Simple grey cotton sweater
Wellness is a huge factor in our Missguided life and bringing out the confidence and motivation in people is something we thrive on. What are your top tips for wellness?
- Work out with friends – took me a while to realise how much easier this makes you stay motivated.
- No phones in the bedroom – get an alarm clock. Life is too short to spend your first waking minutes on a phone.
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2018?
My new single Fluid. Feat Iris Gold just dropped last Friday, and we’ve got some incredible remixes coming out in the next few weeks (can’t say who yet!).
Other than, I have a lot of exciting writing sessions coming up with all kinds of different artists. Looking forward to seeing what comes of them. Instagram is the best place to keep up with any music I’m working on and upcoming shows etc. @aminor
