#MissguidedDiscovered Aniya| June 9, 2017
After releasing her debut single fully loaded with dark pop vibes and immediately gaining attention from the likes of Wonderland, it comes as no surprise that Aniya is no reserve. We caught up with the London-based singer-songwriter to chat guilty pleasures, style icons and secret addictions.
What does a day in the life of Aniya look like?
Every day is different! I am extremely chaotic and usually run around like a headless chicken, but I do write everyday, even if it’s just a phrase. I also try to regularly meditate to collect my thoughts.
How would you describe your aesthetic and how does it inspire your music?
I’d say one side is quite dark, sensual and feminine with dramatic make up and an oriental gypsy touch. On a normal day out though, you’ll catch me in an oversized shirt or pullover, my make up is natural and my pink trainers are definitely the opposite of dark!
Who’s the coolest person you’ve met so far?
Ryan Tedder, while I’m probably the lamest person he’s ever met!
What’s the best gig you have ever played?
Any gig that has let me connect with the people in the room. My favourite ‘gig’ would probably be my Mum’s wedding a couple of years ago. Even though it wasn’t a proper show, it was incredibly special and has definitely been my favourite.
Who would you like to collaborate with and why?
There are so many people I would like to collaborate with. I would love to write with Ryan Tedder – he is one of the best. I would definitely love to collaborate with someone as brilliant as Maxwell – imagine singing with someone like that!
Why do you think the relationship between fashion and music is so strong?
I think fashion is an extension of music, and vice-versa. You can express yourself in a much more intense and precise way when you combine the two.
What’s your favourite music video?
Michael Jackson’s ‘Earth Song’
Who did you listen to growing up?
I listened to Britney Spears 24/7 until I was about 12 and I grew up with a mum who constantly played bands like Aerosmith and Guns ‘n’ Roses. In my early teens I was into tons of rock/punk bands. Later, I started listening to more soulful stuff like Maxwell, Stevie Wonder, Mary J Blige – I love it. My taste has always been eclectic.
Who’s your biggest musical inspiration?
I really can’t pin that down. My inspiration comes from everywhere. Whatever life throws at me or has thrown at me over the years – that’s what comes out in my music.
What’s your guilty pleasure, most played track?
‘How To Save A Life’ by The Fray. Also every old school Britney track you can think of!
Last album you listened to all the way through?
I just listened to Jessie Reyez’ debut EP which was absolutely stunning. She just blew my mind! The last full album was Kendrick Lamar’s ‘’Damn’ which was equally as brilliant.
What track gives you goose bumps?
The first thing that pops into my mind with this question is the performance that Mary J Blige did at the Grammys in 2007 performing a medley of ‘Be Without You’ and ‘Stay With Me Baby’. It literally never fails to give me goose bumps all over my body. I’ve watched it about 298 times! Another all time favourite is Lene Marlin’s ‘Faces’ – it always makes me cry.
What item of clothing can’t you live without?
Jeggings, Jeggings and Jeggings !!
What items do you make sure you pack on your travels?
An oversized pullover cannot be left behind
Who is your style icon and why?
I don’t really look at one person and see them as my style icon. As with my music, I find inspiration from all over the place and anything could catch my eye. I usually don’t go with the newest trend. I just wear what I like.
Where do you look for fashion inspiration?
Travelling to new places always inspires me on so many levels, so a lot definitely comes from there. The same goes for seeing an amazing gig.
What best describes your style?
Drama & darkness meets oriental gypsy
You can only wear one outfit for the rest of the year, what is it?
A jumpsuit – it’s comfortable, timeless and you can make it look fancy so easily.
What’s your spirit animal?
What emoji best describes you?
It’s got to be the smiling purple devil!
Who are you currently stalking on Instagram?
I think I’m the only person in 2017 that doesn’t stalk any celebs on Instagram !
What makes you laugh?
Anyone who’s goofing around. I’m very easy to please in that department.
What’s your secret addiction?
There’s a lip salve I can only get from one shop in Switzerland. I’ve been addicted for 3 years now and I cannot sleep without putting it on. It’s serious!
Who’s your celebrity wannabe husband?
Oh I’ve got a few… Johnny Depp, Gerard Butler and Ryan Tedder. I cannot choose between them.
What would be your superhero power?
Being able to fly. I want to fly around the place so bad!
What was the first thing you did this morning?
I thought about the weird dream I just had, and hit snooze another 5 times.
Tell us something weird about yourself?
I’ve got 3 piercings stuck in my arm – that freaks most people out.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Banks, London Grammar, MUNA, Jessie Reyez and tons of Annie Lennox and Maxwell because I never get sick of them and they calm me down.
What’s your song to get you ready for a party?
At the moment it’s Lorde’s ‘Green Light’!
What has been your favourite place you’ve travelled to?
If you were a Spice Girl which one would you be?
Gotta be Ginger Spice!
What do you love about Missguided?
The range of dresses is incredible!
Where can we see you perform next?
My next show will be around the release of my second track in June. More details to come!
What’s on the agenda for 2017?
To release another couple of tracks, play some shows and release my debut EP!
