#MissguidedDiscovered: Bad Royale| June 29, 2017
We caught up with Californian-based DJ group Bad Royale, who crowned their own music genre known as ‘Kingstep’, to chat career highlights, where we can expect to see them next and check out the exclusive on their new video All I Can Do…
Tell us about yourself…
We are 3 producers and an idiot.
Your new track All I can Do is out now, what can we expect?
You can expect it to become the #1 hit of summer 2017, as well as 2018 and 2019. Possibly forever.
When did you first realise you wanted to make music?
We all started at different ages with different instruments. It wasn’t anything we really expected to get into, music is one of those things which you kind of fall into. It’s not a normal career choice really.
How would you describe your sound?
We call it “Caribbean Bass.” We mix a lot of Caribbean styles of music in with current bass EDM, but sometimes we dabble in more pop sounds, which is how “All I Can Do” can about.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?
Have to say Lollapalooza, because it was our biggest festival and best time slot we’ve had so far.
If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be and why?
The Virgin Mary because she can create gods.
Who did you listen to growing up?
Hard to answer since there are four of us. We all liked different music but basically just what was popular in the 90s, as well as some reggae stuff here and there.
Who’s your biggest musical inspiration?
In the EDM industry, it’s what Major Lazer was doing that really pushed us to start this group.
What’s your guilty pleasure track?
The person answering this question loves listening to Rammstein and random movie scores.
What’s the last album you listened to all the way through?
Don’t think we’ve ever done this honestly. We are DJs, we just pick and choose!
What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?
Being able to sign and release with Polydor Records. It pushed us into the “major label artist” realm and that opened a lot of opportunities.
Who’s the coolest person you’ve worked with so far?
As far as being a general cool dude? Probably Steve Aoki. He’s the coolest dude in this industry. So much about making cool music and doesn’t have that “famous” aura where he thinks he’s too good to talk to people. Just really down to Earth.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
At the moment of answering this question, currently have Jeremy Soule on. Yeah, weird.
What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to break into the industry?
Be original, but be catchy. And push your brand.
You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?
If we really were faced with this, we would just have to create our own album with the greatest songs in the world. That’s really the only way to survive through this.
Where can we see you perform next?
We will be flying out to Jamaica next weekend! Can’t wait!
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017?
We’ve got a sweet end-of-summer tour coming up that is going to have us super busy. We are also working on a TON of new Caribbean Bass music with really big artists on the islands. Really getting back to our early sound with these ones.
