We caught up with Cara Hammond to chat festivals, a day in the life and what’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017…

Cara Hammond

You have just graduated from Leeds College of Music and you’ve already released your first single and had your first festival gig- what an incredible year! Have you always known you wanted to be in the music industry?

Thank you! It’s been a bit of a whirl wind! Yes I have always wanted to be in the music industry. When I was little I always said I wanted to be a “pop star” and I guess nothing’s really changed!

Your new single ‘No’ supports female empowerment and the #NoMeansNo movement- what was the inspo behind the track/how important are these issues to you?

Well me and all of my female friends at some point have experienced different levels of gender equality. Whether we’re out in the street and get cat-called and whistled at, or getting felt up when we’re out trying to have a good time. The specific reason I wrote this song was after an experience in a nightclub where these guys asked me and my friends back to theirs, we refused and they suddenly became quite hostile. That really annoyed me and so I began writing ‘No’. Since releasing and performing this track, I’ve noticed the audience really respond to it and it’s started a healthy discussion into gender equality and respectfulness of all genders.

What does a day in the life of you look like?

Well at the moment it’s being busy promoting the single on social media and in interviews! I’ve also been writing a lot of new material for a new release as well as rehearsing for different gigs over the summer.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?

Love Supreme. It seriously was the best moment of my life. I remember coming off and just crying because I was overwhelmed with all the people who came to watch me and were applauding and wooping to all my original songs. There’s nothing better than that!

Who did you listen to growing up?

Avril Lavigne,  Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue – literally all the pop princesses. I was obsessed.

What’s your guilty pleasure track?

Christina Aguilera – Infatuation. So wrong but so right.

What’s the last album you listened to all the way through?

Him – Something To Tell You. Such a fantastic album!

What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?

Yeah it’s Love Supreme again. I love performing and I love festivals so to play at a great one like Love Supreme was something really special.

Who’s the coolest person you’ve worked with so far?

GL Music, the Danish independent label I’d say. I went to a songwriting camp with them in Copenhagen and got to work with many amazing songwriters such as Olle Markensten and Daniel Bech. I was really happy with what we created and I’m hoping it will be a new release.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Loving Haim at the moment, Sylvan Esso, Nao (saw her at Love Supreme too and OMG), Luna Pines (they’re my friend’s band but they’re awesome and actually supporting Sylvan Esso really soon).

What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to break into the industry?

Just stay confident and stay driven. It’s hard but as long as your passionate you’ll go far.

You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?

Ohhhh that’s really hard. I think it would have to be Every Kingdom by Ben Howard. I associate that album with a lot of happy memories and it’s just a great album.

Where can we see you perform next?

Hifi Club, Leeds on 22nd October supporting the Undercover Hippy.

What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017?

Lots and lots of songwriting and more gigs.
