Meet Mayka. She makes up half of Swedish duo Death Team whose music we’re currently obsessing over. We caught up with her to chat breaking into the music industry, fave gigs and proudest moments so far…
Tell us about yourself…
My name is Mayka, I’m an artist, DJ and songwriter. I’m rapping and singing in the pop/punk duo Death Team. I’m also doing radio shows, DJ-gigs and rest of the time i’m spending in the yoga studio. I live in Stockholm, Sweden and I love vegan food and books in positive psychology.
Describe your sound in five words…
Edgy, hooky, girl power, bass and naive
What was your big break into the industry?
I started out as a DJ about 8 years ago and had some really good exposure in Scandinavia for many years. I played everywhere and was called “Sweden’s reigning queen of electro”. All though that never really happened and I guess I didn’t have a “real break” until starting Death Team. We released our debut single “Fucking Bitches in The hood” two years ago and after that everything changed.
When and how did you discover your passion and skills in music?
Music has been my biggest interest for as long as I can remember. But I never played anything as a child our teen. I was just a lone wolf, collecting records and listening all day and all night. It wasn’t until my early twenties I began doing music myself. I worked in a clothing store and always made super ambitious playlists and decided what was going to be pumped out. I loved seeing customers reactions to different songs. And that’s how my DJ-idea was born. After that one thing led to another and now I’m in a band.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m doing many things right now. Planning Death Teams next single release, working on my solo project and holding lectures about music business and creativity.
What’s been the proudest moment of your career so far?
When I had my first ever live gig at showcase party in down town LA. I had made a couple of demos on my own and taking singing classes for three months. Then I decided I needed a real big challenge so I signed up for this Open arts event. I had never performed live in front of people before and was scared to death. But after tons of drinks and pep talk from my friends I DID IT and I was SO incredibly proud after.
Best gig you have ever played?
A Swedish festival called Way Out West last summer. We had our first Death Team tour and I was very nervous. I came out on stage and got totally blown away – Although we were a very new band the club was packed with people! it was an amazing atmosphere and everybody knew the lyrics to our songs. Magic!
If you could collab with anyone who would it be?
I would love to collab with Flume, Chainsmokers, Major Lazer, Jauz, M.I.A, Björk, Tove Lo and Grimes.
