With over 2,000,000+ plays within a week of his newly released single ‘Never Let Me Go’ and nominated for Beat Guru at the upcoming MTV Millennial Awards, we caught up with Brazilian DJ and Record Producer, Alok to chat fave gigs, career highlights and tips for newcomers trying to break into the industry.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself…
My real name is Alok and I am Brazilian. I have been working as a DJ since I was 11 years old and a music producer since I was 15 years old . Both of my parents are pioneer Psy-Trance DJs (EKANTA and SWARUP) and my twin brother Bhaskar also writes music and works as a DJ.
I can’t talk about my self without mentioning these facts about my family, as it all comes together when we look back and think about how everything happened.
What does a day in the life of ALOK look like?
It really depends on where I am and how busy the day is looking. Although I would say that making music and exercising are compulsory in my routine regardless of where I am. Even when I’m touring I try to make sure I will get both done.
When did you first realise you wanted to make music?
I first came to this realization when I was still 12 years old. The music was already able to drive me deep into places and thoughts. Music has always been really profound for me.
How would you describe your sound?
My sound has been changing over the last year or so. If you listen to my tracks now and listen to the tracks one year or more back you will be able to realize that not only my music has changed but also has emerged into something more meaningful and expressive. That’s because the vocals and words have become crucial in my productions.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?
There are so many unforgettable gigs to remember and to be proud of. Each of them are special and different in their own way. Without a doubt, Tomorrowland Brazil and Villa Mix were the biggest Crowds. I can’t forget how special the gigs in Asia also were.
If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be and why?
There are so many talents out there who I dream of working with. Some of them are Moby, Tiesto , Eric Prydz to name a few…..and the reason is that these artists have inspired me for years and years….. they still do to this day!
Who did you listen to growing up?
The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Infected Mushroom, Moby and many other electronic artists that were well known back then.
What’s your guilty pleasure track?
Oh oh …….I won’t say it hehe!
What’s the last album you listened to all the way through?
Daft Punk and Criollo (Brazilian Rapper)
What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?
To show and share my work with the four different corners of the world and being recognized by it. It has really made my days shiny and complete.
Who’s the coolest person you’ve worked with so far?
There is more than one for sure. My Twin brother, my father, my mother are definitely special and cool to work with, but I also value many producers and singers that have been joining me and believing on my ideas.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Check out my playlist on Spotify 😉
What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to break into the industry?
Never give up! Never let people put you down for something that you have been working on. We all came from ‘’zero knowledge’’ and we have all received many no’s before. Always believe and work hard… use the criticism to improve and think differently and be original and authentic.
You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?
Chemical Brothers – Further
Are you looking forward to Creamfields in August? What can fans expect from this performance?
Oh yeah! You can bet I am!!!
I can promise that it is going to be unforgettable and ‘’off the hook’’!
How does playing in the UK differ to other places?
The crowd in the U.K seems to know a lot about the electronic music universe. It’s always challenging to play for them, but also rewarding as they go completely wild when they feel the music!
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017?
For the next few months I will be living and touring in China and Asia for 2 months, followed by a few shows in Brazil, a few shows in Europe and U.S. Not much sleep and a lot of travelling and touring ahead. I can’t wait to share the latest tracks with you all!
