#MISSGUIDEDDISCOVERED: BLUEY| October 31, 2016
Meet Bluey, he’s the latest DJ whose tracks we’ve been seriously obsessing over and we reckon you will be too. We caught up with the London-based artist to chat fave records, musical inspo and dream collaborations…
Tell us about yourself…
I’m an 80’s baby. I caught on to good vibes in the 90’s doing dances like the running man whilst watching my favourite movies “House party”, “Beverly Hills Cop” & “Boys In The Hood” haha!
DJ EZ was my mentor and benchmark for house & Garage music; Rinse FM was the main station I listened to.
Your music is amazing, which has been your favourite to record so far?
So far recording single number 3 “Bumpa ft Kyla & Fatman Scoop” has been my favourite to record. The energy from both of these artists had me smiling and laughing all session. I get on so well with both of them it didn’t even feel like a recording session, it felt like a party!
What’s the biggest inspiration behind your sound?
The Garage era is the inspiration behind my sound. It was garage music that made me start DJing and producing beats when I was in school.
Who inspires you?
The late King of Pop is my greatest inspiration. MJ told stories and made you dance at the same time. His sound was like no other and he had the coolest swag whilst doing so.
How would you describe your aesthetic and how does it inspire your music?
Cool like the sky on a summer’s evening just before sun set.. free & wild like the ocean in the middle of a mellow storm.
The above inspires me to create sounds and melodies that will touch everybody just as the ocean and the sky.. but in different ways with each song I create.
Who’s the coolest person you’ve met so far?
James Earl Jones who played the original Darth Vader. His voice was insane! I couldn’t believe Darth Vader was talking to me, yet I wasn’t getting swiped by a lightsabre!
What’s the best gig you have ever played?
The best gig I’ve played so far was at Ministry Of Sound when I was just 16 years old. It didn’t go too well but I learnt some of the most valuable lessons that night!
What’s on the agenda for 2016?
For the rest of 2016 I will be continuing to push my debut single “U Sure Do” ft Soulest, making sure its in everybody’s ear drums. I’ve just been nominated for ‘Best DJ’ at the Urban Music Awards (You can vote here) so looking forward to seeing how things go with that! Then gigging in Australia, Dubai, Accra, Switzerland, France & Italy. That, plus writing new material, whilst being on the road!
Who would you like to collaborate with and why?
I would love to collaborate with Stevie Wonder as I grew up listening to his music with my parents & genuinely love his music. I would also love to collaborate with Sticky (old skool garage producer) – if you know, you know ha ha. Oh & Black Coffee!! I just love his sound.
When did you discover you loved your genre music and why?
I discovered it when I was in secondary school, listening to pirate radio stations, from Pay As You Go Cartel to Wookie and Artful Dodger. The whole scene and sound stole my heart and will own it forever. The energy and soul in house and garage is like no other genre, not to mention the excitement of drops and melodies.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
I am constantly listening to everything, all different types of music from all over the globe.
What’s the song that gets you pumped up at a party?
Right now its Opus by Eric Prydz !!
What’s your favourite music video?
My favourite music video is California Love by 2 Pac because at the time there wasn’t another video shot like it .. If you let me have 2 favourites the second is MJ’s Thriller! 🙂
What has been your favourite place you’ve travelled to?
I think my favourite city is Barcelona, I just love the energy but.. saying that, nothing is better than Ibiza haha!
Would you rather have no Wi-Fi for the rest of your life or never be able to fly anywhere again?
Happily ditch the wifi lol
What’s your spirit animal?
What makes you laugh?
Jokes.. ha ha
Do you have any secret talents?
Yes but if I tell you do you promise to keep it a secret? I’m really good with my hands
What’s your secret addiction or guilty pleasure?
Chocolate, chocolate & more chocolate!
Who’s your celebrity wce?
Madonna 20 years ago
What would be your superhero power?
Flying around playing music from the clouds, giving anyone who is down the positive energy to get back up and fight through whatever is getting to them.
What was the first thing you did this morning?
Threw water into my hair to wake up the blue!
Tell us something weird about yourself that no one else knows…
I have to tidy a room before I sit down regardless of where it is or whose room it is or the reason why I’m sitting there..if its awkward to tidy, I just pretend I’m looking at stuff or reading the scattered magazines and tidy it.
