We caught up with Wouter and Sjoerd of Dutch electro dance duo Showtek to talk about their new EP AMEN, touring and what they’re listening to RN.
Hey guys, how are you?
Great, thank you! Currently in Europe flying from city to city.
What does a day in the life of Showtek look like?
Wouter : It depends on the season but I eat healthy food, lots of veggies, fruits, and fibres. An endurance based workout every other day which is usually a run / hike / biking or a gym session. I try to play a little piano in the morning before I go to the studio to start up my musical engine. Then a full day in the studio finished by a nice meal and a glass of wine.
Sjoerd : Depends on the agenda but besides work (being in the studio producing music or being on the road and performing) I try to live a healthy lifestyle. I have been a vegetarian for almost two years and lately I try to be Vegan as much as I can which isn’t the easiest since we travel so much. I love boxing and jujitsu which I practice a few times during the week. For the rest, I listen to music a lot, mostly hip hop and reggae. And I try to spend quality time with my girlfriend, family, and friends since it makes me very happy to be surrounded by the people I care about the most.
Your new AMEN EP is out now, can you talk us through it?
Wouter: We keep fusing genres and styles to come up with new blends so that’s what we are trying to achieve with this EP.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?
Sjoerd: Probably Sensation, to 60k people!
Who did you listen to growing up?
Wouter : Wu Tang Clan, Snoop Dogg and a lot of dance music.
Sjoerd : I grew up with dance music, listening to Faithless for example. But I also listened to hip hop too like Biggie, Master P, KRS One and all that. Reggae as well.
What’s the last album you listened to all the way through?
Wouter : A whole album? I stream now so it’s been a while. Last album I streamed was Drake’s new album More Life.
Sjoerd : Kendrick Lamar – Damn
What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?
Wouter: To make a career out of my biggest passion. I started playing piano because I wanted to express myself and music was the main thing for me to do so.
Sjoerd: Being successful in what we do in general and being able to make a good living out of it! But I think receiving platinum status for our track BAD with David Guetta and being in the top 10 in multiple countries meant a lot to us.
What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to break into the industry?
Wouter: Trust in who you are, what you want to do, and achieve in your life. You only have one life and one career and life’s too short to listen to other people’s opinion that might affect you negatively. I believe everyone is a strong individual. No one else can express your story besides yourself.
Where can we see you perform next?
Wouter: Depending on your location I would say we are practically anywhere, anytime lol.
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017?
Wouter: We have a big North America tour planned after the summer. But until then we will be performing mainly in Europe.
Sjoerd: Besides touring we are trying to spend time in the studio, since that’s the key to our success. As much as we love to share our passion on stage with our fans, we love spending time in the studio and produce music so we can continue to evolve.
