We caught up with Dublin born producer Jack Casey aka EMBRZ to talk about his new single ‘Progress’, career highlights and musical inspo…
Tell us about yourself…What does a day in the life of you look like?
I’m either trying to write music or stressing about not writing music haha. I do think it’s good to try get away from the music completely sometimes. So things like the gym or just hanging out with friends are good breaks.
Tell us about your new EP ‘Progress’, what is the inspo behind it?
I wanted to push myself a little out of my comfort zone and try working with different styles and tempos. What if EMBRZ tried to make a pop song or something a bit heavier? I always really like the concept of ‘Progress’ as well. It’s never a finished destination, it’s about constantly improving and evolving, and I think that’s the way I treat writing music.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?
Electric Picnic at the BodynSoul stage in 2015. I was on at 2am, so you can imagine how ‘buzzy’ the crowd were at that time. A load of my best mates came and it was the first time they had seen me play.
Who did you listen to growing up?
Funnily enough I grew up listening to metal bands like Slipknot, Korn and Deftones in my early teens. Then was big into bands like The Stone Roses and Oasis.
What’s your guilty pleasure track?
Carly Rae Jepsen – Cut The Feeling…. lol
What’s the last album you listened to all the way through?
Kendrick Lamar – Damn
What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?
I think at the very beginning seeing blogs and big YT channels post my music. It was so unexpected and exciting. Getting asked to remix The 1975 was a pretty cool moment, as I was and still am a big fan of theirs.
Who’s the coolest person you’ve worked with so far?
I really enjoyed writing ‘Heartlines’ with Meadowlark. I actually met up with Kate and Dan recently and we decided to put together an alternative version of ‘Heartlines’. Won’t say too much about it right now, but will be out soon.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
I heard this banging tune called ‘Pure’ by Victor Ruiz & D-Nox on Lane 8’s summer mixtape, and have been exploring all their other tunes.
What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to break into the industry?
Keep writing and finishing music. The more you do it the better you become. Also try have some patience, it’s not something that happens overnight. And surround yourself with people that will support you.
You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?
Tough question, maybe……Jamie xx – In colour
Where can we see you perform next?
Upnorth in Michigan, which will be my first US Show, so I’m buzzing about that one!
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017?
Release more music…….I’ve almost finished a second EP 🙂
