Tell us about yourself…
Hi! I’m Emerald. I present ‘Breakfast With Emerald’ on Rinse FM Monday – Friday 7-10am. I’m a DJ, presenter, a model and I used to be a professional hula hoop dancer! I’m 6 ft tall and I’ve got big curly hair.
What does a day in the life of Emerald look like?
I get up early at about 6am, try to dress half decent in the dark trying not to wake up my boyfriend, jump on my bike and head to the studio to do my 3-hour radio show. My days, other than that, usually consist of listening to music non-stop. Prepping for gigs or just digging out great new music. Occasionally hitting the gym, spending great quality time with my cat and watching trash TV, guilty!
When did you first realise you wanted to work in the music industry?
It happened kind of gradually after I left college. But I only really realised I could take it seriously and be good at around 3/4 years ago. I don’t think I could work in any other industry now. I love it so much. I’ve done things in the past couple of years that I’ve dreamed of. I feel so lucky and so grateful.
Who would you say your musical influences are?
My musical influences and musical inspiration really now comes from DJs and artists around me that I am lucky enough to meet and get to spend time with. I’ve learnt that you can idolise artists but that never really shapes what you’re doing in an authentic way. I’ve learnt so much and changed so much since music exchanging, conversing and generally spending time with people I admire who are smashing it in the music industry.
What are you listening to right now?
I’m listening to so much different stuff. The great thing about working in radio is that you get to hear such a range of music and genre. So many different DJs pass through. Such a range of music is playing around you all the time. This generally means that my music taste is always so varied. Right now though I’m obsessing over Portuguese DJs, MCs, producers. The sound is so unique and such incredible dance music.
What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?
One of them was last year when I was Katy B’s tour DJ, we played her headline show at Brixton Academy. It was an incredible experience playing on that stage to that crowd. She is also the best person in the world to work with. I love her so much. Another one was last year, I got to interview one of my favourite artists in the world, M.I.A. which was like a teenage dream come for me, and since then worked on Meltdown festival with Rinse FM which she curated. It’s just so great to get to work with someone and on something that you really believe in.
You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?
That is such a hard question. I think it’s Fat Freddy’s Drop – Based On A True Story
Describe your style in 3 words…
Comfy, fun, a bit sassy
What do you pack when you go on your travels?
Way too much. I am scared of not having enough options. What if I don’t feel like wearing anything I’ve brought when I get there!! Good to take your wardrobe staples I think. And I stupidly always bring 3 pairs of trainers and only wear one. I always take my mini rig speaker, absolutely essential.
What are your beauty must-haves?
Neal’s Yard Beauty Balm, Palmer’s Cocoa Butter, Bio Oil.
What emoji best describes you?
A giraffe emoji. 🦒
Rinse FM have a stage at this year’s Eastern Electrics. Who are you most excited to see on the line-up?
Yes! I’m excited to be playing alongside some legends. Heartless Crew have absolutely smashed their comeback and are so incredibly fun to see live. Not to be missed.
What’s on the agenda for the rest of the year?
Festivals season! Festivals are my favourite place to be in the whole entire world so it’s safe to say I’m pretty excited about that.
