#MISSGUIDEDDISCOVERED: GALLO| December 2, 2016
We caught up with singer-songwriter and all-round mega babe Gallo to chat about her upcoming music, her musical inspirations and dream collaborations…
Tell us about yourself…
I’m American Lebanese. I was born in sunny Los Angeles but moved to the Middle East (Saudi Arabia and Dubai) at a young age and that’s where I did most of my growing up. There wasn’t much to do when I lived Saudi. I’d spend almost every day at home so I really turned to music and theatre to get me through the years. If it wasn’t for those surroundings I don’t think I would’ve had the chance to fall so in love with the piano or start songwriting. Music became the best way for me to escape from everything and it gave me purpose. I’m so grateful I get to now do this every day. I get to make a living out of being myself.
Growing up I always used to write about heartbreak. It seemed like those stories always flowed out of me the easiest but as I got older and grew to know myself more I wanted to be sure to take a more empowering approach when writing those stories. I realize now that it’s my duty as a writer to try to find an antidote to remedy whatever craziness I’m writing about instead of taking a more victimizing approach. I feel like we’ve seen that too much in movies and music when it comes to the stories women tell. Being sincere and honest is one thing but constantly playing the damsel in distress role waiting to be saved by someone gets tiring. We live in a different age now and I wanted to write stories that reflect the powerful mindset I see in the real women I meet every day.
If Stanley Kubrick wrote music…..
If Macy Gray and Andy Warhol had a love child…..
If Nancy Sinatra and Portishead went out for ice cream…..
That would be me.
What 5 travel essentials can’t you live without on tour?
My Keyboard so I can write on the go, my facial toner “P50” it’s Jesus in a bottle, laptop, phone and Choco Swiss Cereal – chocolate pieces filled with Nutella sooo yum it’s crazy
What can we expect from your upcoming videos and what’s the inspiration?
I’d say my main inspiration is cinema – the whole fantasy of escaping to another world. Some of my favourite films are by such greats like Stanley Kubrick, Dario Argento, Quentin Tarantino, and Tim Burton. These films made me feel so weird and awesome at the same time and that’s what I want to make others feel when they watch my videos. I want these pretty little scenes to make them feel uncomfortable in the best way possible when they start to get darker…so much that they can’t stop watching!!
I just want to create what feels right in that moment and I’ve been so fortunate to work with an awesome team on my videos who are true creatives that feel the same. We have a general idea of what we want to create when we start but a lot of stuff we film we just come up with on set because it’s what makes sense right then. It’s that type of fearlessness I get inspired by when we put these videos together and it’s that fire that creates art that makes people feel something.
How would you describe your aesthetic and how does it inspire your music?
A creepy doll of a 50s Hollywood Starlet
Who’s the coolest person you’ve met so far?
Not sure if this counts but my parents are the coolest people I think I’ll ever meet. I’m convinced that my friends would come hang out with me just to see them……and I totally get why.
Where can we see you perform next?
2017 can’t wait!
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2016?
I have my debut single we’re getting ready to release in January 2017. This will be followed by the rest of my EP and music videos!! Really excited to share everything 🙂 And I’m actually already back in the studio working on my second EP. So lots to come for all you lovely angels!
Who would you like to collaborate with and why?
Muse! They’re such amazing musicians and composers. Their music was the soundtrack to my life as I scarily navigated my way through my teens. They incorporate a lot of piano in their sound too so as a pianist that drew me in. Not many people do that, especially not the way they do.
Stevie Nicks! So I can twirl with her one stage! She’s just such an inspiration. Everything from her voice, to her lyrics, to her outfits are beautiful. I don’t feel like she tries to be relatable that’s not what’s important to her. What’s important is being authentic and genuine
Stromae! Saw him at Coachella last year and he was so good I came back the next weekend just to watch him perform again. He blew my mind! His performance and music were all I could think about for weeks after. I just felt like he was born to do nothing else.
And the list goes on….. <3
Why do you think the relationship between fashion and music is so strong?
I’ve always found it so fun to express myself through what I wear. I grew up in two of the most distinctive cities in the world Los Angeles and Dubai. They may seem like opposites but these are really two of the most innovative and forward thinking cities in the world! Fashion in these places is about taking risks and having fun, not necessarily about earning the approving nod from others. It’s about wearing pieces you love today despite what others think and that’s my approach to what I wear. I wear what I want to, for myself not for others, and I have the same mentality when it comes to my music. I don’t like putting myself in a genre. I’m just being me. I’m writing and creating what feels right in this moment not based on what others think I should be. I’m really not looking for any sort of validation from people but instead I’m looking to have fun and hopefully create something that inspires them. So when it comes to fashion and music they’re both extensions of me in such strong ways. I don’t want to put myself in a box or into a genre I just write what feels right and I’m not quite ready to wear a uniform yet.
