Pop might be at the centre of Harper’s music, but with inspo from Rihanna to Radiohead, it’s no wonder she’s quickly becoming one our faves.  If you haven’t already, now is a good time to check her out ’cause her new single Skin is out tomorrow (win!).

We caught up with her ahead of her single release to chat about breaking into the industry, her style on stage and what she’s got on the agenda for the rest of 2016…

What was your big break into the industry?

I was lucky enough to meet the production team Eagleye through a mutual friend a few years ago. They were looking for female vocalists to demo some tracks so naturally, as any aspiring artist does, I went to do a session with the boys. Later on they introduced me to the label ICU, who were looking to sign new talent, and by some miracle everything fell into place. I went from selling high street shoes to writing my own music in a professional studio. One very lucky girl!

What are you working on at the moment?

At the moment I’m working on a second EP before putting out my debut single. I really want to give people a taste of what’s to come with this new material. I’m forever trying to create music that’s edgy and slightly left of field, whilst retaining catchy, pop goodness.

What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2016?

I’m going to be playing more gigs across the UK, some cool festivals and venues. Cannot. Wait! Then following the release of my new EP (which is coming very soon), I’ll be getting ready to launch my single, whilst putting the finishing touches to the album.

Who’s your guilty pleasure most played?

Well I love dancehall music, not that it’s my guilty pleasure, but generally the content is quite explicit! I do love anything old school too. Maybe some Nelly – ‘Hot in Herre’ or Fragma – ‘Toca’s Miracle’. Basically anything that makes me feel like a teenager again!

What’s the last thing you listened to?

I’ve been listening to James Blake’s new record recently; it’s as incredible as I suspected, as well as listening to Radiohead and Bey’s new albums.  Bit of an eclectic mix but they inspire me in different ways.

What song do you want to be playing as you walk into the club?

Right now, all I want to hear in the club is Drake and / or Rihanna. ‘Work’ & ‘Controlla’… 100%! Such bangers!

What item of clothing can’t you live without?

Black jeans. I love wearing black as it’s slimming and comfortable, yet still looks cool and sophisticated.

What items do you make sure you pack on tour?

Definitely some trainers. I love having something comfy but cool to throw on after a set.

Who is your style icon and why?

I love Rihanna’s style. She’s able to pull off most things others would shy away from. As an artist it’s encouraging.

Where do you look for fashion inspiration?

I’m a big follower of online fashion. I love reading various blogs and following certain fashion icons on Instagram. Still love to pick up a fashion magazine from the shop though, especially when there are freebies! 😉

What best describes your style on stage?

For me being comfortable in what I’m wearing on stage is very important. To feel confident in my outfit and able to walk in my shoes is necessity. I have a small waist and wider hips so I like to wear things that showcase my waist, generally a two-piece outfit consisting of crop top and high-waisted skirt or trousers. I really love wide leg trousers and jumpsuits right now.

What’s your favourite fashion trend this season and why?

I’m a fan of anything mesh and sheer, so I’m really loving that slightly grungy, festival look at the moment. Though as it’s summer I’m trying to experiment with bolder colours and bring out my complexion a bit more, so the ‘Havana’, tropical, botanical trend is something I’m enjoying too.

If you could steal anyone’s wardrobe who’s would it be?

All of the Kardashians’ wardrobes, plus Beyonce’s, Rihanna’s and Kanye’s. I actually really love Kanye’s style, especially that beautiful cream Balmain jacket he wears!
