#MissguidedDiscovered: Holywater| June 13, 2017
After releasing her haunting new single ‘Hush’, an ode to the one who got away, we caught up with Producer/DJ Holywater to chat dream collabs, career highlights and working with Cruel Youth.
Tell us about yourself…
I’m a DJ/producer out of Los Angeles. A California girl born and raised! Floating through life day dreaming and always looking up at the sky watching for shooting stars and spaceships.
How would you describe your sound?
A mix of edm, pop, r&b, or whatever I’m feeling like making at the moment!
What does a day in the life of Holywater look like?
Lots of listening to music and lots of eating! Even when I’m not in the studio or working on music, I try to spend time every day working on something creative because that’s when I feel my best.
Tell us about your new track ‘Hush’, what has inspired it? What can we expect?
It’s a future bass track that features the insanely talented and gorgeous Teddy Sinclair of Cruel Youth. The song is about that one love we’ve all had that feels impossible to forget. That person you still look for in everyone no matter how much time has passed. It didn’t last, but they still secretly consume you because they gave you a kind of high that no one else ever has.
How was working with Cruel Youth?
I’m such a fan of Cruel Youth’s whole vibe and I’ve always loved Teddy’s voice and think she’s an incredible songwriter. Our individual sounds are completely different, but we found a way to mesh them together and I’m so happy with the way it turned out.
Who would you say your musical influences are?
I grew up listening to a lot of classic rock like Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty with my family, and my Mom always loved disco. I was obsessed with No Doubt from their start and used to watch their music videos over and over. Gwen Stefani has been a major influence on me, she’s such an incredible performer. I also always loved TLC and Aaliyah. Then I started hanging out at this record shop by the beach in middle school and that’s how I got introduced to punk and the underground hip hop & DJ scene. So my influences are pretty wide ranging & all over the place but they have all shaped my taste and style.
What are you listening to right now?
I have this random playlist that has a lot of Banks, the Ronettes, and Kendrick Lamar on it.
What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?
Working on Holywater music has been one of my proudest moments so far. I’ve dealt with a lot of heartbreak in my life like many people do, but I’m extremely happy with where I’m at in this moment and feel really strong and at ease on a personal level, and I think it all reflects in the work I’m doing now so I’m excited to have fun and share it with the world.
You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?
Oh man, that’s tough. Fleetwood Mac ‘Rumours’ never gets old. Also the Beatles ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ album could be a good option!
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Rihanna! Who wouldn’t though want to though?
What emoji best describes you?
The palm tree or the cherry!
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017?
Will be continuing to release a bunch of new music throughout the year and get out on the road and start playing shows!
