We caught up with Lauren L’aimant to chat guilty pleasure tracks, career highlights and what’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017…
Tell us about yourself…
My name is Lauren L’aimant, I’m a singer-songwriter / producer hailing from St. Albans, just outside North West London and I’ve been making music for most of my life. I’m influenced by my experiences, people, places, and have a pretty eclectic taste in music: not only what I make, but what I listen to as well.
What does a day in the life of you look like? My day starts off with a strong coffee, but after that, I’ll usually head to the gym and then spend the rest of the day making music. That could be writing, recording or producing in my home studio, or heading into central London to collaborate with other music-makers!
Tell us about your new track ‘Family’, what is the inspo behind it? I had a few people close to me in mind when I wrote ‘Family’. It’s about being there for someone when they’re in need, just as The Prince’s Trust is there for the young people it sets out to help. I hope the song reminds those who hear it that love and togetherness is what life is really all about, particularly during the trying times the world has endured recently.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played? So far, I haven’t actually played that many gigs! Being asked to play at London Fashion Week to perform ‘Family’ is most definitely the most exciting gig I’ve played so far! I plan to perform a lot more from now on as I get such a buzz from it.
Who did you listen to growing up? I was obsessed with Tina Turner. My mum had a video album and I literally played ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’ a million times. I have flashbacks of sitting at the VCR just rewinding it and replaying it. I still listen to it now, and even recorded a rework of it (which is up on my Soundcloud page). Another obsession was Mariah Carey, and I genuinely believe she’s one of the reasons I sing. On the complete flip-side I am 100% a house & garage girl, who went mad over Ms Dynamite (teehee), Shola Ama, Craig David, and soooo many more.
What’s your guilty pleasure track? Ever since I heard Charlie Puth’s ‘Attention’ on Snapchat, I fell in love with it. I am partial to a bit of extreme pop music from time to time.
What’s the last album you listened to all the way through? I’ve just finished Mura Masa’s new album. Just wow. That guy has skills! Another one to mention is Tom Misch. I dream of working with him in the future. There’s so much talent around at the moment.
What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment? I’m sure there will be plenty more of these moments to come, but I’ll never in my life forget the first time I heard myself on the radio. It’s happened a few times now and it doesn’t get any less exciting!
Who’s the coolest person you’ve worked with so far? Goodness me there’s been many. I wrote a song with Sigala once who I’ve highly rated since then (and he is absolutely smashing it right now), a producer called R3WIRE who is tearing up dance floors all over the world with Club MTV, and also my boys ICARUS who have been paramount in everything I’ve done over my music career. Sorry, that was three.
Who are you listening to at the moment? I’m loving London Grammar and Freya Ridings at the moment with that haunting, pop-come-indie kind of sound. It’s really moving. I also think Etta Bond is an absolute Queen. Minimal r’n’b is so hot right now. I often find myself listening to Dance Anthems with Danny Howard on Radio 1 too, as I just love house music.
What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to break into the industry? My advice would be that persistence is fruitful.
You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it? Wow. What a question! I think it would have to be Craig David’s ‘Born To Do It’. Had a bit of an obsession with him too (I still do), and that is a wicked album. There are so many I could’ve said, though.
Where can we see you perform next? I have some more shows coming up in conjunction with the ‘Million Makers’ competition over the Summer and into the Autumn, in London. I’m also just confirming details of my first international show, so that’s very exciting! I’ll be posting details on my social media soon so ‘watch this space.’
