#MISSGUIDEDDISCOVERED: NOVA TWINS| October 11, 2016
Meet Nova Twins. The bad ass girl gang duo are taking the music scene by storm and it’s their punk vocals and DIY videos that have got our attention. We caught up with them to chat their music inspirations, dream collaborations and how they get hyped for their gigs…
Tell us about yourself…
We are Amy Love (guitar/ vocals) and Georgia South (bass/ bv’s) aka Nova Twins. I guess people describe our sound as urban punk, but you can call it what you like.
The vibe is heavily distorted/synth sounding basslines, hip hop drum grooves (by our drummer Tim Nugent) and punky/grimey vocals.
What’s it like being two girls, rocking a male lead music scene?
Male lead? Women are running the show!
What 5 travel essentials can’t you live without on tour?
Amy: Peppermint tea, red lipstick, blanket, baby wipes, baggy T-shirts.
Georgia: Fluffy blanket, neck pillow, croissants, kit kat, afro comb … we are so rock n roll…
How did you both meet?
Amy: I got snowed in at Georgia’s house one day.
Georgia: And she never left… true story
Your videos are amazing, what’s the inspiration?
Georgia: Bassline bitch was DIY all the way, the video spontaneously happened in our lunch break when we were recording in the studio. Took 10 mins haha…
Amy: Yea all our videos are DIY or done on a next to nothing budget. We literally had a little party with all our close friends for our second video Hitlist. We supplied them all with free booze (thats where the budget went) so that they would come out of their houses on a Monday night! There were ‘mostly’ girls in the video and a few of our favourite boys, but the girl only scenes where insane, we chanted and screamed at the top of our lungs, the energy and atmosphere was electric. Everyone let go of their inhibitions and really went for it. It was liberating and nice to see people just having a laugh, being themselves.
How would you describe your aesthetic and how does it inspire your music?
Amy: We’re super heavy but always futuristic with lyrics that aren’t about love…the sonic attack is really the message mixed with a powerful woman stance…
Georgia: Yeah we are never the victim, we want to empower people to do or be whatever they want to be.
Where can we see you perform next?
Amy: NME Box Park in London on 30th October, Moth Club on the 31st and we’re playing at a secret location in Manchester on 4th November so watch this space!
What’s the best gig you have ever played?
Georgia: Thats a hard one.. most recent ones are Wonkfest, supporting Kate Nash at Old Street Records and Koko Camden.
Amy: I agree, we also enjoy playing small intimate venues, you really get to know your audience and it feels more personal.
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2016?
Amy: We take each day as it comes, hopefully we’ll land on the moon.
Georgia: Yeah anything’s possible, 2016 is still full of surprises.
Who would you like to collaborate with and why?
Georgia: A collab with Rihanna would be sick, or Lola Wolf she’s awesome too.
Amy: Doing a track with, Rihanna, Missy Elliot and Jack White altogether would be insane.
Why do you think the relationship between fashion and music is so strong?
Amy: We love customising our clothes and creating styles that represent our music. When we wear our clothes we feel Nova and ready to take on the world! It’s a mind set and another way to express yourself!
Georgia: We wear what our music sounds like, I agree we definitely wear what we feel most Nova in! The relationship between music and fashion is so strong as you can say so much to people without saying anything at all.
What gets you hyped for a gig?
Amy: We put on our Nova Spotify playlist and start jumping around, usually to Missy Elliot or Snoop Dog – Drop It Like Its Hot… you get the picture.
Georgia: Yeah the Nova playlist is banging, we always play it to get us hyped!
Who did you listen to growing up?
Amy: There was no escaping Spice Girls when i was growing up and my mum would always play Toni Braxton’s Album or Whitney. I then went to college and discovered bands like Deep Purple, New York Dolls and Mc5 ect I went through all the genre phases like you do and now I just listen to whatever suits my mood. Anything goes.
Georgia: I shared my iTunes with my older brother and dad when I was young so I’d listen to a range of music from Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway to Eminem, Destiny’s Child and NERD.
What’s your spirit animal?
Georgia: House cat. They love to sleep and eat… and eat some more…
Amy: A flying Tiger with giant wings.

What items do you make sure you pack on your travels?
Amy: Make up remover, I can never be bothered to take it off when we get home late from a gig, so I take it off in the car on the way home.
Georgia: Yeah that’s true! Phone charger, sunglasses and this cute lucky toy dog I won in an arcade that looks like a turd.
Who is your style icon and why?
Amy: We just love mixing up the clothes that we customize with other random cool brands, some days we feel more punky and other times we just want to be straight up hip hop and everything else in between! The dress up spectrum is endless when it comes to fashion!
Georgia: Yeah we don’t have a specific style icon we love customizing our clothes, we get addicted to it! When we start we can’t stop we’ll be there at 4am still sewing, 3 movies deep, with our hands shaking and sore from pin picks haha. It’s the best feeling ever when its done!
