We caught up with Canadian singer-songwriter Ruth B to chat dream collaborations, celebrity wannabe wives and what’s on the agenda for 2017…
Tell us about yourself…
I’m a singer songwriter from Edmonton, Alberta in Canada. My family is from Ethiopia, and I’m very passionate about music.
Your videos are amazing, which has been your favourite to create so far?
The ‘Lost Boy’ music video. It was my first official music video and it was really cool to work with a director I’d always wanted to work with (Emil Nava, who has worked with Calvin Harris, Jessie J and Ed Sheeran). It was cool to see my song come together in a visual aspect.
How would you describe your aesthetic and how does it inspire your music?
My aesthetic is really natural and comfy, I think that inspires me a lot. I like to be comfortable in every day life, so in my writing I like to keep it honest and real – nothing too over the top.
Who’s the coolest person you’ve met so far?
Harry Styles – he’s really cool…and cute, haha!
Where can we see you perform next?
I’m going on tour with Alessia Cara in the US, and hopefully I’ll be back in Europe really soon.
What’s the best gig you have ever played?
My first New York show at Joe’s Pub. A lot of music industry people that were working with me came along, and some fans. It was a really intimate show and I got to play a lot of new music that no-one had heard before, so it was really special.
What’s on the agenda for 2017?
I’m working on my album so hopefully that will be out by then, and then more touring and working on new music as always.
Who would you like to collaborate with and why?
I would love to collaborate with Stevie Wonder. I think it would be incredible to watch him work, even if I was just sitting and watching him play the piano – that would be enough for me, I’d be very happy.
Why do you think the relationship between fashion and music is so strong?
I think because music is something that comes from within, so it’s nice to partner that with something you can visually see someone wearing. Fashion goes hand in hand with what you’re talking about in your songs. You can see more into a person with what they wear.
What’s your favourite music video?
It’s not really a music video but…The Beatles have a live performance of ‘Please Please Me’, it’s really hard to find on YouTube. I love it because it’s beautiful to watch something that happened so long ago and watch all these girls totally screaming and freaking out, and I see girls doing that now for other artists.
What’s your spirit animal?
A platypus. I don’t know why, I just love Platypuses.
Who are you currently stalking on Instagram?
I’m always stalking Taylor Swift because I love her posts, and I’ve loved her since I was 13. It’s cool, I love how social media can almost make you feel like you’re friends with who you listen to.
What makes you laugh?
My little brother. He’s a year younger than me, and he’s the funniest person ever. Just looking at him makes me laugh…don’t know if that’s a good thing for him, haha!
What’s your secret addiction?
Lindor Chocolate…not such a secret to my family. People actually have to hide boxes from me at Christmas because I’m a savage.
Who’s your celebrity wannabe wife?
Rihanna. She is perfect!
What would be your superhero power?
Teleporting. I hate planes and the amount of travel I have to do now is insane, so if I could just snap my fingers and be where I need to be, that would be great.
What was the first thing you did this morning?
It was a super early morning – 5am wake up call! So I just woke up and took a shower.
Tell us something weird about yourself…
I don’t like the number 3. Ever since I was a kid, I just stay away from 3s…they’re not nice.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Frank Ocean – Channel Orange. I’m really hoping that he’s going to release a new album soon.
What’s your song to get you ready for a party?
Lately ‘Work’ – Rihanna. Any time we go out, that’s the song we blast when we’re putting our makeup on.
What has been your favourite place you’ve travelled to?
I love Europe in general, but London in particular. It’s a dream for me, mostly because I’ve always been obsessed with Harry Potter, but since visiting I’ve discovered so many incredible things about the city.
If you were a Spice Girl which one would you be?
Sporty – I would be the sportiest of them all, always playing basketball.
What do you love about Missguided?
I love that Missguided interview artists, and integrates music and fashion.
What item of clothing can’t you live without?
I can’t live without a pair of combat boots, I always need to have some on me. Any time of the year too.
What items do you make sure you pack on your travels?
Always a good pair of jeans, and a white tee. For those casual days where you don’t need to dress up as much.
Who is your style icon and why?
My style icon is Rihanna. I know I could never actually dress like she does, so it’s nice to view this fantasy of what I would be like if I had the time.
Where do you look for fashion inspiration?
Really not too far, probably just what my day is gonna look like and then that inspires me. So if it’s a relaxed day, then some sweats…if I’m going out, something nicer.
What best describes your style?
Laidback and super casual.
What’s your favourite fashion trend this season and why?
I really like rompers and how they’ve made a come back. I like how they’re not too dressy and not too casual, and work for pretty much anything.
If you could steal anyone’s wardrobe who’s would it be?
I would steal Tyra Banks’ wardrobe. I just think she is so cool and effortless.
You can only wear one outfit for the rest of the year, what is it?
My sweatpants and a baggy hoodie, I’d be the happiest person on earth if someone said you can only wear this for the rest of your life.
Which city has the best fashion?
New York. Absolutely, it’s unreal. You just walk through the city, and if you’re in sweats you just automatically want to look better, as everyone is so on point.
