We caught up with Sonny Alven to talk a day in the life, fave gigs and dream collaborations…
What does a day in the life of Sonny Alven look like?
It depends on the time of the year. If it’s festival season, I focus a lot on gigs and everything around that. If it’s off season, I focus more on producing new music. But, most of the time, a normal day would be: waking up, eating breakfast, going to the gym, working on music and hanging out with friends. I spend a lot of time during the evenings/nights to work on music.
When did you first realise you wanted to make music?
Back around 2011 I was a huge fan of Swedish House Mafia and that whole scene. I was really curious about how this type of music was made so I decided to figure it out. After a while I just got really hooked on making music and didn’t want to do anything else.
How would you describe your sound?
Hmm, that’s a hard one! The last couple of months I feel like I’ve found myself more and more in the music I’m making. So my new songs will have a different style than previously, which I am really excited about. It’s a bit more chilled.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?
I think it would be at one of the festivals I’ve played in Norway. Big crowds and amazing vibes!
If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be and why?
Maybe Lana Del Rey, I’m a huge fan of her voice and songwriting. It would definitely be a dream come true.
Who did you listen to growing up?
I actually listened a lot to Eminem and was really into breakdancing, haha. At the same time my big brother introduced me to Red Hot Chili Peppers which I then listened a lot to.
Who’s your biggest musical inspiration?
At the moment I’ve been listening to people like Bon Iver, HONNE, Låpsley and Oh Wonder. But I’m not quite sure who’s the biggest inspiration.
What’s your guilty pleasure track?
“What Goes Around Comes Around” by Justin Timberlake. Just love that song!
What’s the last album you listened to all the way through?
That must be James Vincent McMorrow’s new album called True Care.
What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?
I think it must be when I played Bergenfest in my hometown last year. I feared that no one would come and suddenly the whole tent was packed and there was still a huge line to get in. My friends and family were there, it was such a good moment!
Who’s the coolest person you’ve worked with so far?
I can’t really pick one, they all have been really cool!
What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to break into the industry?
Work hard and follow your heart. I know it sounds cliché but it’s true. In my opinion it’s important to do what you love and not do what you think everyone else will love. Make music first and foremost for yourself.
You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?
Wow, I have no idea how I can answer this question haha!
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017?
Finishing up new songs and start releasing them! Really excited about the new stuff that is coming out this fall.
