We caught up with singer-songwriter and all-round mega babe Tayla to talk new music, best gigs and what she thinks we should be listening to RN.
When did you realise you wanted to make music?
When I was 13, I realised I could sing and could connect with people in different ways, so that’s when the seed was planted. I started to write my own songs about stuff I was going through, and what my family and friends were going through. I got a lot of love back from my circle and this gave me the drive to want to do it properly.
Your new single ‘Coming Back Around’ is out now, what can we expect?
You can expect a full on ‘rule breaking’ attitude, new thrills and clean visuals.
What was the inspo behind the track?
The inspiration behind this track is something a bit personal and, also something that I feel a lot of people go through all the time. As messed up as it is, we have all got that one friend or family member, boyfriend or girlfriend, that always seems to get off on seeing you fail at something you love.
How does it differ from your debut ‘Call Me Danger?’
The lyrics in ‘Coming Back Around’ are more direct and darker than ‘Call Me Danger’. Also the production is less dancehall/carnival and more deep/hip-hop, which was 100% what I was going for.
What does a day in the life of you look like?
These days I’m rehearsing for the live show I’ve got coming up. But sometimes it can be random as hell from going to theme parks, BBQ parties at friends, travelling to different cities for songwriting, to recording music in my bedroom studio back in Birmingham.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?
I’ve loved all of them, but gun to my head was ‘Sink The Pink’ because it was the first time I performed ‘Call Me Danger’. The crowd was huge and beautiful.
Who did you listen to growing up?
Artists including Pink, Missy Elliott, Aaliyah, Cher, 2pac, Eminem, Biggy, and Craig David.
What’s your guilty pleasure track?
Don’t judge me but, Tiny Tim – ‘Thru The Tulips’
What’s the last album you listened to all the way through?
Calvin Harris ‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol 1’
What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?
Being in ‘The New York Times’ was the craziest moment for me by far.
Who’s the coolest person you’ve worked with so far?
Rudimental – they’re so humbling it’s unreal.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
I’m listening to Halsey and another bad ass female artist called Jessie Reyes. I also love Khalid. They’re all getting them plays from me right now.
What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to break into the industry?
Something my mom always told me and still does. That every door is a way in or out, and if you want anything badly enough, do more than knocking.
You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?
Pink’s ‘Take Me Home’
Where can we see you perform next?
I just did a really cool show in store at Selfridges on Oxford Street, London. It was part of their newly launched music night ‘Music Matters. I have other shows lined up so keep an eye across my social channels for all updates.
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017?
I’m planning to release another single and shoot a cool video for it, and start doing a lot more shows after that.
