#MISSGUIDEDDISCOVERED: DJ TIGERLILY| July 14, 2016
Half-mermaid and half-DJ, Australian DJ Tigerlily is taking the electronic music scene by storm. We caught up with to chat about life on the road and what life as a DJ looks like for her…
Tell us about yourself…
My name is Dara Hayes, better known as Tigerlily. I come from Sydney Australia and have been DJing for 5 years now. Part time DJ, part time mermaid, part time nerd.
Your videos are amazing, which has been your favourite to create so far?
Thank you! Paradise was definitely my favourite to film. Despite being July in Australia (smack bang in the middle of winter), the vibe on set was amazing with such a dedicated and creative team.
How would you describe your aesthetic and how does it inspire your music?
Messy and colourful. You can definitely see my personality shine through my music and my live sets. It’s all about good vibes.
Who’s the coolest person you’ve met so far?
Scary Spice – talk about a nostalgic moment.
Where can we see you perform next?
I”m currently touring Europe but I’ll be home in Australia playing shows for the first two weeks of July before I jet back to Europe for the summer. Head to my Facebook for all the tour dates.
What’s the best gig you have ever played?
I played to 30,000 people once in Malaysia. It was like nothing else.
What’s on the agenda for 2016?
I’m playing shows that are mostly overseas in 2016 which is a big move but a very exciting one for me. I love travelling, experiencing and learning about new places, as well as meeting new people, so I’m having a blast. Lots of music is about to be released, I’ve been doing a lot of writing so I’m excited to get it all out there.
Who would you like to collaborate with and why?
This question is always so hard to answer. Musically, I’d love to collaborate with Aussie rapper Tkay Maidza one day. I’ve also been listening to a lot of Salmo who is an Italian rapper. I’d love to work with him one day. I’m also in the process of expanding what I’m doing on a creative scale, so collaborating with fashion designers, artists, fitness gurus, and creatives in general is something that is definitely on the horizon.
Why do you think the relationship between fashion and music is so strong?
Both fashion and music are mediums or platforms that allow people to indulge in self expression…. through music and fashion we can tell stories, convey emotions, and create fantasy visions. I love that, and I think that is why they come hand in hand.
What’s your favourite music video?
I love Justin Bieber’s ‘I’ll Show You’ filmed in Ice-Land. The landscape shots are to die for. I’m happiest when I’m in nature and this video clip is a really beautiful representation of how incredibly powerful, diverse, and ultimately beautiful our world is.
What’s your spirit animal?
A dolphin. They’re super smart and are one of the only other animals apart from humans that have sex for pleasure.
Who are you currently stalking on Instagram?
Tash Oakley (when am I not stalking her).
What’s your secret addiction?
Sugar (it’s no secret either – I’m trying to quit)!
Who’s your celebrity wannabe wife?
Scarlett Johansson. For me she is the pure embodiment of the complete woman.
What would your superhero power be?
To be able to speed read and be able to retain all the information.
What was the first thing you did this morning?
Rolled over and kissed my amazing boyfriend. JOKES! The first thing I did this morning when I woke up was look at the time, and realise I have the day off today in Italy, so I snoozed my alarm for another three hours.
Tell us something weird about yourself…
I have a white birth mark on my stomach and it only comes out when I am naturally tanned or sunburnt!
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Kehlani, Salmo, Tegan & Sara, and James Blake.

My top favourites are Stockholm, New York and Tokyo!
If you were a Spice Girl which one would you be?
Sporty Spice – she had so much energy and attitude.
What do you love about Missguided?
I love that Missguided provides a platform for young women to express themselves through fashion. It’s fun, it’s accessible, and it’s all about girl power.
What item of clothing can’t you live without?
This changes a lot, but right now I can’t live without my matching two piece peach tracksuit from DOPE in LA!
What items do you make sure you pack on your travels?
A killer pair of black jeans you can dress down, dress up, or even wear to perform a show.
Who is your style icon and why?
Bad Gal Riri. Her style is so versatile. she can smoothly transition through so many styles and colour palettes. I love that!

Instagram. It’s so easy to link up with your favourite designers and fashion inspos and to see what they’re wearing and where you can purchase items from.
What best describes your style?
Messy – One day I’m tomboy, the next I’m preppy, the next I’m wearing a sports luxe inspired look and then in the evening you can see me in heels and a slinky dress.
What’s your favourite fashion trend this season and why?
I know this is probably a really basic answer but I’m obsessed with Kanye inspired neutrals.
If you could steal anyone’s wardrobe who’s would it be?
Bad Gal Riri 4 sure.
You can only wear one outfit for the rest of the year, what is it?
Cargo pants, Timberlands, a black crop and bomber jacket.
Which city has the best fashion?
I love the fashion hub that is New York City. However, I visited Paris last week for the first time and it definitely opened my eyes up to a whole new world of fashion and aesthetic! To be honest, Sydney and Melbourne both have really great displays of creative and forward thinking fashion and I love that (Aussie Pride)!
