#MISSGUIDEDDISCOVERED: NUUXS| March 6, 2017
Introducing NUUXS. She’s the UK-based artist who’s already caught the attention of Spotify and BBC Introducing and she’s quickly becoming one of our faves too. We caught up with her to chat musical inspiration, dream collabs and fave music vids…
What does a day in the life of NUUXS look like?
I can’t really complain, as it varies all the time- sometimes I’ll get up to go record and write in the studio and sometimes it’ll be a rehearsal or an event I have to go to. I love to write creative stories on the side too and I’m in love with films. I’ll usually cook for myself and save eating out for special occasions with friends and family.
How would you describe your aesthetic and how does it inspire your music?
Again it really varies – I can be an absolute sloucher at times wearing leggings and oversized hoodies and then I’ll feel the urge to dress up a bit more. I’m loving ankle boots at the moment and I try to recycle my old clothes to whatever trends I’m feeling today. I think that in my music videos I really try to indulge in the character- my first single Holy Man was all about cult life so I had everyone wearing black leather jackets as though it were a gang.
Who’s the coolest person you’ve met so far?
What’s the best gig you have ever played?
It’s so hard to choose because I just got back from a tour supporting Skinny Living and it really was all about the people – everyone was so lovely- however I’d have to say The Adelphi Club up in Hull because I’d heard so many unforgiving rumours about the crowds so I was terrified. I was completely overwhelmed at how warm they were and Paul Jackson who owns the place was an absolute legend too.
Who would you like to collaborate with and why?
Childish Gambino because It would be beautiful.
Why do you think the relationship between fashion and music is so strong?
I think they’re like sisters- same blood running through their veins but essentially quite different. They can push and encourage each other to be better and always have each others back. They both make you feel something- when you look good you feel good- when you listen to music that means something or reminds you of someone you’ll also feel. So I guess together they are two creative entities that have meaning.
What’s your favourite music video?
You gotta love Sia’s music videos at the moment- love Maddie Ziegler.
Who did you listen to growing up?
I listened to whatever my mum and older sister listened to. My mum loved her Bon Jovi, Gloria Estefan, Oasis, Madonna and my sister would be listening to Babyface, Mariah and Whitney, Aaliyah, Usher. I always loved soundtracks though – any music put to film was
always so cool, I loved Tarantino’s work and I fell in love with Sting when I watched Luc Besson’s Leon.
Who’s your biggest musical inspiration?
I love so many artists from Alabama Shakes to John Legend to Joe to house music to rock- i mean everything is great when it’s good music- I love new artists too – Sir Was is amazing im loving his music and In The Midst especially.
What’s your guilty pleasure, most played track?
Haha I love to singalong to Ariana Grande I’m so into you and my most played track is Darkness and Light by John Legend and Brittany Howard.
Last album you listened to all the way through?
Solange Knowles- A seat at the table.
What track gives you goosebumps?
Lazarus by David Bowie- undeniably powerful.
What item of clothing can’t you live without?
My black Adidas hoodie.
What items do you make sure you pack on your travels?
A good moisturiser I tend to go for organic products because I have sensitive skin. My electric toothbrush, my makeup of course and two types of shoes- one comfy pair and one for evening if I’m going out- two jackets and a hoodie and accessories. I always wear my Louis Vuitton gold necklace which has an N for Nuuxs. Somebody won it for me by playing Hook a duck at a charity event a few years back.
Who is your style icon and why?
I think Rihanna is amazing, she can pull off any look and doesn’t limit herself to one style.
Where do you look for fashion inspiration?
I love browsing street style on the internet and when I get my hair done I’ll have a good old gander through Vogue and Marie Claire to see what’s going on.
What best describes your style?
I’d say it’s comfy, feminine and fun.
What’s your favourite fashion trend this season and why?
I love the slogan t shirt and match it with a cool skirt.
If you could steal anyone’s wardrobe who’s would it be?
Again- Rihanna does night and day so well.
You can only wear one outfit for the rest of the year, what is it?
A cool off the shoulder jumper dress, ankle boots, a nice big bag to fit my life into it and a nice cozy faux fur coat What’s your spirit animal? Scrappy Doo
Who are you currently stalking on Instagram?
What makes you laugh?
There’s nothing better than laughing with someone you know really well and it’s all from eye contact because you already know what there thinking- also if someone starts laughing I’m the sort of person that will start laughing with them even if I don’t know what’s going on.
