We caught up with South London singer, songwriter and pianist Lily Mckenzie. Lily took the time out of her busy schedule to chat to us about the music she’s currently loving, what’s in store for 2020 and her latest single, Over My Ex.
She has previously collaborated with artists such as Wiley, Giggs, The Manor, Falty DL, Crazy Cousinz, Yxng Bane, Mr Eazi and more.
Catching up with Lily…
For someone that may not be familiar with your music, how would you describe your sound?
My music is a mixture of all my influences, from 90’s RnB, uk house, afrobeats to grime and all things in between. I write from personal experiences so there’s always emotion and honesty within my music.
How did you develop your unique sound?
I always wrote poetry and songs as a child, then when I was 15, I started singing with a grime crew. After that I started singing in bands as well as featuring on UK funky tracks. I feel like all these experiences and collaborations influenced my sound and led to the music I make as a solo artist now.
What top 5 songs do you have on repeat RN?
- Bonobo – Emkay
- Bootsy Collins – I’d rather be with you
- Mr Eazi – Miss you bad
- ‘Ear Dis- Hey girl
- Kaytranada – Nothing Like you
What’s your all-time favourite album?
That is so hard there’s so many albums, all totally different.. but in this moment I’d pick Craig David – Born To Do It
Who inspires you musically?
I’d say Aaliyah was one of my biggest inspirations, but I’m inspired by so many different artists from all different genres.
Who would your dream collaboration be?
I would love to work with SBTRKT… I’ve always loved his production and been inspired by his sound.
What’s your favourite moment from your career so far?
I feel like it’s all a journey, there’s always going to be ups and downs and it’s important to take it all in and look at the bigger picture. So, there are loads of moments that have been important to me, some may have even been low ones as they have forced me to make changes. One favourite moment I’d say though, was performing at Glastonbury with Stanton Warriors over the Summer, that’s always been a festival I’ve wanted to sing at and it was such an amazing experience.
What’s on the agenda for 2020?
In 2020 I’ll be releasing a lot more music that I’m really excited about, I’ve been working with some great producers and can’t wait to put out some of my new tracks. I’ll also be announcing a headline show, I’m really excited to showcase my music live.
