If you’ve ever wanted to know what the world of styling is like then Louby McLoughlin is one girl you’re gonna want to chat to. We caught up with her to talk all things fashion, where she finds her inspiration and gives us some tips on how to break into the industry…
Tell us a bit about yourself…
I’m a Stylist and Owner and Creative Director of OKgrl, previously a fashion editor at Pop Magazine.
You seem very inspired by pop culture, has it always been an interest for you?
Yes definitely. Ever since I was young and could watch cable TV, I had an interest in the art and glamour of pop stars, music videos and the glossy world of celebrity culture. It’s something which has stuck with me and influences my work.
When did you know you had a talent for fashion?
I had an interest in image, design, beauty, art and fashion and naturally found myself gravitating towards fashion as it’s always an industry that covers all these realms and at an exciting fast pace. It’s ideal for me as the work I do is not entirely based on the styling. I work in art / creative direction too which is about concept, graphics and the way i choose to present the fashion imagery.
Where is the best place you have travelled to for work?
Seoul this year ! It was an amazing place I would love to go back.
Can you tell us about your online zine ‘OKgrl’
Sure, Okgrl is a creative platform that i made with David and Kim of DVTK. we wanted to create an entertaining fashion publication which could be considered half way between an app and magazine. It’s for anyone who finds themselves playing on apps and games on their phone and has an interest in music and fashion. We want people to play and have fun and to challenge the idea of what fashion imagery can be in 2016.
What was it like styling Mary Benson AW16 runway collection?
It was awesome, we did a pop punk theme which is basically my teen years. The girls sang Blink 182 covers and Mary’s designs are really great I love her.
Which photographers have you enjoyed working with the most?
I liked working with them all but i loved to work recently with Bradley and Pablo who are very talented and they create the animation and the photography which is very skilled. We made a ski season shoot with the model Jayde Pierce.
What did you study?
What’s on your agenda for 2016?
Shooting more editorials, launching OKgrl 2, styling pop stars, making product for the OKgrl shop.
When and why did you start styling?
It was just something I naturally gravitated towards. I liked it and so I worked hard by interning and assistant for a long time before doing any of my own work.
How do you balance so many different projects?
You have to dedicate certain times to different parts of the job. Sometimes it’s the more creative projects and other times i have to focus on commercial work and others the business/ admin side of things. It’s good to keep a balance.
