GETTING TO KNOW SASHA SAMSONOVA| April 21, 2016
LA-based Sasha Samsonova is a super-talented fashion photographer and video director. She’s already worked with Kylie Jenner and she’s the latest babe to shoot our SS16 Peace + Love campaign. Shot out in the LA desert, we caught up with Sasha to find out what it’s like to shoot with mega-famous Kylie and what went down on set at the Missguided shoot.
So how did you first get into photography?
I started photography at 16, using an old soviet film camera I bought at a flea market. It just made me happy so I kept on taking pictures, never really planning to become a photographer or make it my future whatsoever – I was a ballroom dancer at the time!
Your photography is amazing with a very unique style. How would you describe your photography style?
My photography is a reflection of me. Everything I am, projected on what I’m taking pictures of, if you can call that a style…
We know you’ve worked with Kylie Jenner quite a bit, who’s been your favourite person ever to shoot?
I don’t think I have a favorite person but I definitely have favorite shoots that I’ve done, and my work with Kylie is definitely one of them.
Do you tend to come up with the concepts for your shoots or does the person you’re working with, for example Kylie, have input too?
I love to have the people I’m shooting have their own input too, even if it’s just a tiny bit. It helps me feel their energy and create something to make them happy as well. Two heads is always better than one even though I always get my way in the end with the visuals.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My day starts with all my emails and calls whilst I’m still in bed, refusing to actually get out and start the day. Then I’m usually headed to set and depending on how long I’m working I usually go to my contemporary ballet class after.
How would you describe your shoot uniform?
When I’m on set I try to wear something I can sit down and roll around on the ground in because that’s what happens to me pretty much every time!
What’s been the most amazing location you’ve shot?
I think Northern California is one of the most stunning locations I’ve ever seen.
Take us through how the day worked on the Peace + Love shoot for Missguided…
We had the most beautiful girl in an amazing location for the Peace + Love shoot, with plenty of gorgeous stuff to wear, so it went pretty well! Having an all-girl team was so much fun, not only on set but on our little travel to and from the location –
I can’t wait to share the results.
What was your favourite piece from the Peace + Love shoot?
My favorite piece was definitely the white suit. I loved how it shot in the middle of the dry lakebed in the desert – it just had kill bill written all over it.
Do you have a muse?
I don’t have one muse in particular but there are a few people in my life who I work with on set that have an outstanding energy that inspires me beyond everything else.
How did you get into shooting video as well as photography?
I was invited to direct a music video randomly, based on my photography work. They wanted me and I gave it a try. Essentially I wanted to do film and now directing is my big passion.
What advice would you give to those wanting to become a fashion photographer?
I’d say stay in your lane and don’t try to be anyone else or take certain pictures just to build a following or impress the crowd. Just create as you see it.
What’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened on set of one of your shoots?
I once had someone faint in the middle of the shoot – that’s probably the most extreme thing that’s ever happened to me!
Who is on your wish list to shoot?
Who or where do you get your inspiration from?
I’m inspired by film mostly.
What could you not live without?
My eyes! I need to see.
What’s next for you – do you have any big plans coming up?
Of course! Everything is just getting started.
What’s your favourite thing about being a photographer?
I have the control of creating the image.
