We caught up with mega babe singer/songwriter Malaika to talk musical inspo, her new track ‘Stop For a Minute’ and what’s on the agenda for the rest of the year…

Tell us about yourself…
I am a singer/songwriter from Ireland. I live in Leeds and moved here to study popular music at Leeds College Of Music. My genre is Jazz/Pop and I love to experiment with mixing both genres in new and exciting ways.

When do you realise you wanted to make music?
I realise i wanted to be a musician when I was 11. I found this electric guitar in the loft and the moment I saw it I realised that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I soon started listening to a lot of metal and rock. When I was 16 I started studying music and that’s where I discovered jazz.

You’ve just released your second single ‘Stop for a minute’, what can we expect?
Yes, I’ve released my second single. This track is the nearest to my truest sound I think I have reached so far. I spent a lot of time in the studio working on the sounds and getting it right.

What was the inspo behind the track? How does it differ from your debut ‘I don’t feel the same?’

Its different from ‘i don’t feel the same’ as includes more synths and its a bit more edgy. I love the fact we used a vocal and messed with it and chopped it up and use it as a instrumental hook.

What does a day in the life of you look like?
I love to exercise and eat really healthy so that is always something I think about daily. Then I will usually have a gig in the evening and spend the day either writing music or replying to emails.

Malaika
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?
100% the Montreal Jazz Festival. This was a showcase gig organised by the PRS foundation, BBC introducing and Jamie Cullum.

Who did you listen to growing up?
I only really started listening to music at around 11 years old. There were some vinyls knocking around the house. So it was bands like Thin Lizzy that I started listening to first.
What’s your guilty pleasure track?

‘I’m Like A Bird’ by Nelly Furtado

What’s the last album you listened to all the way through?
An – For All We Know

What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?
Winning the Best Jazz/Blues Awards at The Unsigned Music Awards.

Who’s the coolest person you’ve worked with so far?
It has got to be John Beck who co-wrote and producer my two latest singles. He has worked we artists such as Corrine Bailey Rae and Izzy Bizu who I absolutely love.

Malaika
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Charlie XCX, Nao, Lukas Graham

What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to break into the industry?
Just never stop working towards you goals.

You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?
Robert Glasper – Black Radio 2

Where can we see you perform next?
Headrow House, Leeds on the 3rd October

What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017?
There is lots going on behind the scenes for me. Stuff that I can’t really announce yet. However I can tell you I’ve been writing and collaborating with some new
songwriters and producers, and I am really excited for the new material we are coming up with, so hopefully there will be an EP soon.
