AN INTERVIEW WITH PHOTOGRAPHER NASTIA| June 28, 2016
Nasta is a sh*t-hot US-based fashion and beauty photographer who recently shot our accessories lookbook. She describes herself as fascinated with faces, lips and eyes, which tends to dictate her aesthetics and photography style. Wanna know more? We sat down with Nastia to get the lowdown on her life as a photographer.
How did you first get into photography?
People used to tell me I would make a great entrepreneur or manager, you have it in you. But that’s not what I wanted to do. I love art, fashion, and beauty so I was looking for an avenue I could go down to do that. I thought about all the times I would grab my Kodak and take pictures of my friends after school and had so much fun doing it. I decided to study photography, and it was one of the best choices I’ve ever made. In it, I found a passion, something that makes me happy. I also found out a way to combine my strengths with what I love. I choose photography as my medium of communication. I like to capture moments I think you can’t do with any other mediums.
How would you describe your photography style?
People say that I am the kind of photographer who gets fascinated by faces and bodies; lips and eyes dictate the way I capture a moment. That’s the main thing behind my aesthetic style – I’m all about getting the most out of a simple situation.
What’s your day job?
I am currently taking the Dawson College Professional Photography Program. Yes, I am still a student! I would like to be a full-time photographer, but I think that education is crucial. I hate going to school because I don’t get to choose what I learn and what I do however the further I’ve gotten into the program and my photography journey, the more I realize that I need it. I also understand that forcing myself to do things I would not usually do is helping me discover things about myself and helps to be more creative. Assignments are also a good way for me to prepare myself for clients that will ask for specifics things.
Where do you get your inspo?
My inspiration comes from my experiences. The subjects I explore are the ones that touch me personally. When I started photography, I was extremely young and I am still today. I did not know myself, and it’s by building my identity that I found my style. I think that my photography reflects a lot who I am. The subjects I explore are always related to my personal experiences.
What’s your favorite thing to shoot?
My favorite things to shoot are creative portraits. I enjoy producing images with a creative team. I like elaborating on my concepts with a makeup artist, a stylist, and models.
You shoot a lot of mouths; whose has been your fave?
My favorite mouth will always be the first one I shot: Camille De Repentigny. She’s the one who inspired me to start doing close-ups. I love shooting with her; it is always a pleasure.
What’s your dream in life?
My dream life would be to become a photographer who uses her art to change things. I imagine myself traveling around the world making auctions for charities and creating images that have an impact. I don’t want to stay in one place; I think there is too much to explore and learn.
What camera do you use?
I use a Nikon D610.
Describe yourself in 5 emojis?
Fire emoji, two pink hearts emoji, BFF emoji (the two girls with bunny ears), camera emoji and white bird with branch emoji.
If you were a body part, which would you be and why?
As a visual artist and a person who loves observing, if I had to choose a body part, it would be the eyes. My eyes are what I use the most often and they are significant to me. Without my eyes, I could not do my passion and I could not appreciate it either.
What do you love about the Missguided accessories used in the shoot?
I love the diversity. There were various options for so many occasions and styles.
Which was your favorite piece?
Probably the choker with the golden ring in the middle – it’s something I would definitely wear for a night out with a bodysuit and high waisted pants.
