Design Assistant Annabelle works within the Design team at Missguided, helping to create the new product that hits the site each week. Wanna know more? We asked Annabelle all about her job…

Hey Annabelle, so can you tell us about your role as Missguided Design Assistant?

As a Design Assistant, I help the Designers get their designs sent out by CADing them and sending packs out to be sampled.

There is a lot of researching involved as an Assistant on blogs/magazines/Instagram/Pinterest, looking for new inspiration for our current trends, next season’s upcoming trends and also research for my own personal designs.

Every week when I get the time, I also do my own designs under our chosen trends for that season.  I source designs from street style images and blogs and if there are any adhoc designs that the team love, we look to create and get them on the site.

Did you always know that you wanted to be a fashion designer?

I always knew I loved fashion design, clothes and drawing and was always entering design competitions when I was younger.  It wasn’t until I was at Art College that I realised that I could have a job that I love in Fashion Design.  I did taster courses in all the different fields e.g. fine art, graphics, and when I did fashion I just knew it was something I was passionate about and had to pursue further so applied to do Fashion Design at Uni.

How did you get the job at Missguided?

I got the job in quite an ironic way really.

I went to a Young Designers talk that was being held in Manchester by Cosmopolitan Magazine.  It featured people across the fashion industry explaining how they got their jobs and it was there that I heard a talk from a previous Designer from Missguided who spoke about her journey and where she was now.

I guess it must have had an impact because it inspired me to apply for a role and I ended up getting the job.

If you could give any advice to an aspiring Fashion Designer, what would it be?

Do things which push you out of your comfort zone and get you out there, put the effort in and don’t give up. I nearly didn’t go to the talk being held as I didn’t know how it would help me get my job.  It was a cold February night and I had to travel alone to the event using the last of my student loan to buy the ticket but I am so glad I did or I might not be where I am today!

Finding a design job after Uni can be really hard but keeping inspired by looking at what’s going on in the fashion industry and doing your own design collections, researching and staying focused will keep you on the right track to securing your dream job.

What are the perks of the job?

Getting to be creative and inspired every day! I love getting up and knowing I can go to work and help design amazing clothes which people love to wear.  I get to work as part of a team to make an initial vision into a reality online.  When you are doing something you love it never feels like work!

I think personally seeing my designs onsite, and seeing customers and bloggers wearing them is definitely a perk of the job.

What’s the biggest thing you’ve worked on?

Probably the Nicole x Missguided collections we did with Nicole Scherzinger. Although I didn’t get to design for the range I got to help with initial research and making inspirations boards and packs for it.  It was really rewarding to be part of the team and see how well it did knowing that we had all worked together to reach that goal.

What are you looking forward to next at Missguided?

We’re currently working on SS15 which is amazing.  I can’t wait to see all the campaign images and product for it going up onsite, it’s going to look great.

I also just can’t wait to see what Missguided are going to do next as a brand.  We have already collaborated with a big celeb and have brought out loads of new ranges like activewear and plus size so I’m just really looking forward to what’s coming next.
